Chocolate flavored upsell

So, I am strolling by a chocolate store and a lady is standing outside selling strawberries dipped in chocolate for $1. You had to go inside the chocolate store to pay for them which means you have to walk by racks of chocolate truffles and fudge and...sorry, I'm starting to salivate...

I originally planned to buy 2 strawberries for me and 2 for my daughter. I walked out of the store $35 worth of chocolate later...

So, what are y'alls favorite examples of non-IM upsells? I always try to figure out what the upsell is on everything these days, because it gives me good ideas for internet marketing.

The big ass time share companies have it going with the upsell....

From a FREE weekend getaway at a posh resort...

...to all of a sudden thousands out of pocket to a slick well-rehearsed 'presentation'...I love going to those presentations just to test how good the salespeople have been trained by trying to 'take them off track' from their presentation - it is truly amazing...they keep coming back to the sales script and really trained well on how to close!

I also keep a strong eye out for what the car sales ads are saying - some of the best offline marketing.

      Cheers, Mia

That's like in Vegas where the Casinos serve you free drinks. Handing out free alcohol can actually be quite cost effective.

Or ladies nights, where the bars lure in the hot babes by offering women 2 for 1 drinks, which of course brings in hordes of guys. Er. So I read somewhere.

Or one of the most profitable upsells in history - "You want fries with that?"

        Hi DanaW,

My least favourite is marriage. And I hate the way scarcity is cynically used to get you to buy the upsell.

          Oh you did NOT!

Okay, to quote Larry the Cable Guy - I think - "I don't care who you are, that's just funny right there."

It's just another continuity program :p

But serves you right for not insisting on a returns policy

That's not an upsell, thats forced continuity.

Most of these examples aren't really upsells.

      Great addition to the thread!

Every time me and my girlfriend go to a clothing store in the mall they do it like crazy. I try on a pair of jeans and they bring me 5 more pairs along with 5 shirts to go with them.

Same in the shoe store. Every time I buy a new pair of shoes they try to sell me more socks and protective spray.

    That was some unique examples...

Has anyone seen the new video with Mike Filsaime , how he goes into McDonalds and orders a Big Mac... then they offer him a Coke ?

Good Example right there for sure.

Well Chris, first of all, I can't help but notice that all you do on just about every thread is criticize.

What I'm asking about is something where you are sold or given away something cheap, in order to get you to buy more. Call it what you will.

I'll say. I'm not much of a gambler, but last trip I was a few thousand up, buzzed and holding a Jack & a King. Bet it all... dealer had 21. Go figure.

One of my favorite examples of a sort of upsell. We decided to have the delis in our stores over slice every time. Customer wanted a pound... woops sir/mam this is just a little over a pound, is that ok. It was almost always ok.

Then of course the typical upsells followed.

Just like opening up the gauges in the market (thicker steaks etc...)

      Profits soared

        That's brilliant, Tom!

Hey, when I was in the chocolate store today and I asked for a quarter pound of fudge, it was a couple ounces over and he asked me if that was okay! And of course I said yes. Who doesn't want more fudge? And why would I make him cut another piece?

        Waiiit a minute...

You notice it's never accidentally a few ounces UNDER??

          Never lol.

I can't say much due to some papers I had to sign. However in most large operations your every move, and purchase is recorded on video tape.

New locations are designed to sell you the highest profit items as far as shelf space allocation is concerned. Animated shopping patterns are modeled on computers when prototype stores are designed.

All of your senses come into play, visual, audible, right down to the smell of cooking that is blown into the waiting area of Deli's as they roast meat on "California Grills"

Your up sold right down to the coupons you receive in the mail, to upgrade you to more profitable items.

It's truly amazing how much research goes into this and the technology behind it.

And... the branding etc. starts with your children. The reason I could retire at 49 is the corporation that I worked for is so good at it that it's scary in a big brother 1984 sort of way...

          I better shut up.

          Cheers,
          Tom

And then Tom mysteriously disappeared and was never heard from again...

The way big brick and mortar stores arrange and market their wares is fascinating. If you know how to do that, Tom, I'm sure you are doing GREAT in internet marketing.

Hey - you could write a WSO on it! Oh wait - the deli men would get you. ;^)

It's just as easy to spot when they don't upsell you - it almost becomes frustrating.

When we eat out there's just one or two restaurants that actually make an effort to upsell. When you're ordering, the waiter goes into his spiel about about how good the dish is you've chosen but could he recommend a different one (usually more expensive) People seem to love it. Those two places really do well. And when we go to the other places we're disappointed that the waiter doesn't recommend anything - we really want to spend more money with them.

Gotta love the forced upsell by good wait staff...If you order a "coke", they don't ask large or small, you're getting a large.

In India we have a local weekly market organized where you can basically buy anything of daily use... vegetables, clothes, oils (ahem) etc.. Not that these are the only places where you get to buy something, just that they are weekly. And a not very unique upsell strategy is applied here... esp. by the vegetable sellers.

Once you bargain and place an order on the first vegetable (lets say tomatoes), they have this very unconditional guarantee (not always but very often) that if you buy at laest "X" Kg of potatoes (or veg B) and they turn out to be not so delicious, they will refund the entire amount EVEN AFTER A WEEK. and they make "x" ridiculously low.

Note that you have to bring the vegetables back uncooked to them to get the refund.

They already know their stuff is great, and they hit you with the offer right when your wallet is open, so you can't refuse.

Brian, you're brilliant. And incorrigible. From following you on Twitter, I am pretty sure that I can figure out what the upsell is. Self-liquidating offer - oh, I will NOT even go there because I think Allen wants us to keep the forum reasonably clean.

              I have one.

The local store advertised notebooks for 5 cents each in August, right before school starts. When you go to buy them, they are in the middle of the school supply section and the school supply lists are conveniently displayed in the same section - and you can take a copy with you. How generous!

And the clerk checking us out also asked us if we were sure we got enough supplies.

We homeschool, so I didn't need the list, but I did get my other supplies while we were there.

I was on my way to the local Subway sammich shop in the mall, and was passing by this Japanese place. Don't ask me what it's called. Anyway, the girl offered me a toothpick with Teriyaki chicken on the end of it.

    I ate it.

I said, to hell with Subway.

I got the combo platter with fried rice, Teriyaki Chicken, and Beef Broccoli.

No chocolate. But I do have this for whoever is hungry for the sweet stuff..

I made it myself. No MSG.
