Is a trackback good or bad?

Hi I got this message on my blog about a trackback, but I don't know
what it means, is this good, bad, what? Thanks Ed.

    It means somebody has referenced your blog post on their blog/site..

      Looks like it might be a spam trackback.

      Check out the blog post URL it came from to see if it's something you'd want to accept on your site because if you approve it, it goes live on your blog post as a comment that all your other readers will see

    keep an eye on these - I get about 20 spam trackbacks a day on one of my blogs.

    Trackbacks are a way for you to let someone know you referenced something they wrote - the problem is that some people use this to get their links on your pages (they put the track back on their blog and it shows up on yours).

    You can turn trackbacks off, so if you keep getting them just do that. You can always manually delete any that are already there.

    It's a shame but spammers use them just like they spam comments too.

    I've lost track of the number of comments I've blasted that say things like "good point but I think the original poster was closer" "or nice blog, I'll be joining your rss feed" etc.. they're just generic crap that come in every day from the same spammers.
