Split testing question

Hey there,

I wanted to get your opinions and experience. When split testing a squeeze / landing page, what do you split test first?
Headline, design, colours, graphics ...?

I used to always test my headlines first, but recently I fell into discussion with Brandon from ClickMagick and he said definitely I had to test my design first.

What are your practises, and why are you doing it the way youre doing it and have you tried different approaches?

Because my decision to split test headlines first is one I made out of observing my own browsing habits. Maybe I am totally wrong

Largest probable impact to least probable impact.

Start with split testing the most important elements and work towards the minor issues.

For me this is the overall look and feel (usually the image), then headline, then call to action button, then colours, then bullets, then text... and so on.

    Good luck with your venture

      Thank you for your input!
So you'd say the overall design is more important than the headline. Did you ever try a different approach and compare results? Like split testing something else first?

    hi,

    its depends for me really..

    i use Click-funnels and i
    normally get 2 similar
    templates and test them
    with the same headings
    but different colours...

then wait until one of them is a
winner and i also see the winning
ratio or percentage, if its tight then
i carry on with the run until i have
a large different between the percentage...

then carry my way on from there
    trying different stuff different designs
until i can get a higher optins...

Hope that was clear for you...

I always test the headline first. In my experience, if you test the design first, there are too many variations in the design to pinpoint exactly why you are getting the conversions you're getting. Is it the color? Is it the layout? Is it the graphics?

Personally, I always do a 3 way split test. I test the headline first, then I'll test the subheadline. Then, I'll even test what info i ask for in the form. The last thing I do, is test the actual design.

I would say, do what's been working for you.

Good approach! What you say about the design having too many variations makes a lot of sense to me. Great

Thank you! How many Clicks or opt ins would you say are enough to decide on a winner? I heard 500 to 1000 was recommended or something like that

I always start by the headline. That's usually enough to see some improvements.
Then I go to the rest of the copy. The colors are the last thing I try to tweak.

Just what I was doing all the time. I guess I did something right after all

What opt in rate is your minimum, below what % do you throw a squeeze into the garbage can?

When I first started doing split testing which is what needs to be done but all I did was change an image and it went from zero conversions to over 50%

Headlines play a big part as well.

Yes sometimes it's just putting the headline inside quotes that'll do a lot or something really small like that

start testing the major design elements above the fold first = different layouts of pages

for example with one of my sites I had a headline, 3 bullet points, video & testimonial shown above the fold. First thing was to test the location ofall of these to find the main format to use (I ended up with headline top of page, bullets underneath with video image to the right and testimonials underneath).

Next was testing out the headline

Then the video image/call to action

    Then the background image

Last things was to test the bullet text and everything else beneath the fold.

How many different positions of the bullets and video did you test? Did you test the background colour of your page? Thxs for your experience!
