please critique my plan

i plan to design (or have designed) a site that targets a specific niche. essentially, my plan is to turn the site into a video database. the videos will be whatever i find on youtube related to my niche. i then plan to upload the videos and categorize them. so if someone is interested in this particular niche, instead of going to youtube and having to waste time typing in various things, they can now just go to my website and find a plethora of videos related to this topic.

as far as monetization, the main thing that people in my niche would buy would be books. so, i'm not sure what i would do other than maybe become an amazon.com affiliate? also, maybe i could set up one of those online tshirt shops where i would get a commission for each labeled tshirt sold - and the tshirts could have my url on them or funny things people in my niche might appreciate. has anyone ever done this? how else could i make money from the site if the main product related to my niche is just books?

is this a viable way to make money? the niche is pretty big but i can't find any similar site and i assume there would be a fairly large demand for such a site.

i was thinking of hiring somebody on elance.com or something similar to comb youtube and upload all related videos.

The first thing I always think when I can't find a site like the idea I have is why? Not saying your idea isn't a good one b/c I don't know the market, but if it's a big market could someone else have looked at this idea and decided it wasn't viable.

Books are a tough one to make a good chunk of change on.

I'm assuming that since books are the main option for affiliate offers then the adwords costs are too high so adsense isn't going to make you a pile of cash either.

What about private ads or selling leads? Is there anything that ties into offline service businesses that need leads in the market or possibly buy products from an offline merchant? You could setup a private deal?

What about could you create your own product/course etc. to sell to the niche and base it on the books available? Or maybe an online membership site?

Building a site that has a big reach and lots of traffic potential is great but it is conversions of some sort that bring money to the bank. If the market doesn't buy online, or doesn't have a need for some sort of information worth buying etc. then it's possible that it could be a big hit traffic wise but not so in the monetary column.

This is a good post. I will say that I think it is possible for the site to get a lot of traffic. As you mention, though, conversion is important; but, if it's pretty cheap to set up a site such as this (which it seems to me that it would be...find the videos, upload them, pay hosting), and I'm confident there is a demand, is this alone a enough of a reason to give it a shot? I guess the answer still remains...it depends. I think the primary thing I need to do - in order to determine if this idea is viable - is to research the market a bit more...related niche sites...to see what other sites are doing monetarily.

I plan to outsource the uploading and searching of the videos since there are so many and I have a lot of other things going on.

If you're just starting you might want to pick a product and build an article marketing campaign around it. That is what is working great for me. It's very effective and costs practically nothing.

Why don't you create your own videos as a part of your overall marketing plan to market either a product of your own creation or an affiliate product. You can have some related videos on your site only as a resource.

Are you going to embed these videos, or take them off of youtube, and host them yourself?

Hmm, I was thinking about taking them off youtube. Also, I read that it might be possible to not allow clicking on the video to jump straight to youtube (losing visitors) by installing some kind of code with each video. What do you recommend? What is the benefit of hosting them yourself? I sort of feel that people are more trusting of youtube videos than other ones since youtube generally loads faster.

This looks like a tough one too me, i would go the arcticle marketing route, or as has been said affilitate or promote your own product. No matter what, take some kind of daily, weekly montly action. Thats more than most do, and the rewards can be awesome.

Whether I should go "the article marketing route" is not the topic at hand--though you may be right. It seems to me that is a completely different business model.

Regarding the concept I proposed, are there any sites that do the same thing (maybe with better niches) that are profitable? Eg. they get traffic from people interested in youtube videos and make money from ads on their site.

    Sounds possible...

You'll need a lot of traffic to make it worthwhile.

I would recommend embedding the YouTube videos, not hosting them yourself..

If you host them yourself and get lots of views, this will cost you bandwidth...

So embed. Maybe a blog, like wordpress would work for you?

    Good Luck!
