How should I further improve the keyword tool I'm developing?

Hi guys,

In the last two months I've been working on a keyword generation tool, that's kind of like ubersuggest, but ... simpler.

The tool is located at keywordgen.com.

I'm trying to gather as much feedback as possible, so I can add more functionality to it, but at the same time keep it simple, if that makes sense.

I have contacted a lot of big marketing / SEO websites, and from the very few responses I got, the main suggestions were to include export functionality and keyword volumes.

These two things are actually on my current list:
  • add export function
  • add search volumes

Now I'm asking you guys to tell me what you like, don't like, what you would change, etc. It doesn't matter if it's design (front-end) related, or back-end related, since I'm working on both ends.

I'm trying to gather as much feedback as possible to further improve the tool and make sure it suits the needs of the vast majority of users.

Also, I plan on creating more tools like this. I really want a suite of marketing / SEO tools that's free and gets the job done.

Hope any of this made sense

Thanks in advance guys!

P.S. the site is hosted on heroku and it's just a basic dyno running, so don't mind the loading speed

I would probably remove the wait message, "scanning your hard drive."

It's an interesting tool, but without volumes it's not much help.

But I bookmarked it and will be back to play.

Those are actually random loading messages ) I couldn't decide on a single loading message so I used a whole list.

But I've jotted this down, and I'll go through the list and remove those messages that might make the user feel "uneasy"

      Thanks for the quick reply!

Ok, so I removed the following loading messages, since they might be interpreted the wrong way:
        • 'Scanning your hard drive for pr0n. Please be patient',
        • 'Water detected on drive C:\\, please wait. Spin dry commencing.',
        • 'Adding random changes to your data...',
        • 'Please wait while this nice progress bar fills to 100%...',
        • 'Ravaging drive C: ',
        • 'Insufficient disk space. Reformatting drive C: to allocate space...',
        • 'Scanning your hard drive for pirated movies...',
        • 'INJECTING ROOTKIT...',
        • 'Corrupting Files...',
        • 'Sending all your pr0n links to your mom...',
        • 'Please wait while I explode...',

Let me know if you find any more disturbing messages.

Also, since I forgot to mention in the first post, every time you make a query, it gets appended to the "breadcrumbs" section until it reaches 5 queries, so you can always jump back a few queries if you reach a dead-end.

And in case I didn't mention this as well, all results are clickable, meaning a new list will be generated when you click a result.

Thanks again for helping me out here!

Likely the single biggest determining factor in what you should add to your
KW tool is what the competition is doing vs what you are doing.

Just ask: "Do we need another KW tool? If so, what can this one do that
separates it from all the others?"

If you are struggling to come up with ideas, it could be that most angles have already
          been covered.

            Hi Alex,

The thing(s) I don't like about the other tools is either they're too complex to use for the average user or they're paid.

I don't see why a noob has to jump through additional hoops (learning to use a tool which might or might not help them or paying for something they're not certain will help) just to get a simple task done.

On the idea side, I'm not struggling. There are tons of ideas running through my head, but I asked for feedback to see which ones the people actually want.

What I will be struggling with is not a lack of direction, but understaning and implementing those ideas programatically.

Sure, big companies might have a large team that deals with these tools, so its cost is somehow justified, but if I want to keep these tools free, I'm not sure how many people will actually jump aboard.

The next features of the tool that I'm planning are the export function (which I think will be quite easy -> loop through selected kwds and append them to a list), the keyword volume and competition.

I know these are the general features people have asked for. Keyword volume will be challenging, since I haven't worked with the AdWords API yet, and from what I understand, it's like learning a new operating system

Competition -> I'm not sure how relevant AdWords competition is if we look at the SEO aspect of it all. From what I understand, competition in AdWords is the amount of people bidding on the same keyword, so it'
s not really relevant for people looking to optimize their site, or write theme-targeted in hopes of gaining organic traffic for their website.

I don't think I'll measure competition this way. Competition, from an SEO standpoint, is how many websites are optimized for a keyword and how many actually show up in the search results for that keyword.

Seems I have lost my train of thought right about here. So... there.

Thanks Alex for taking an interest in the topic.

Your tool seems to be a copy of Ubersuggest. Why reinvent the wheel? Where is the value add?

I personally don't consider "competition" stats.

Actual search volume and suggestions is all I'm concerned with in a KW tool. I'll judge the competition on promising keywords myself.
