Auto Play or Not?

I have just put a video on one of my sites which is set to auto play as soon as any visitor arrives.

Normally I wouldn't do this, as I personally dislike auto playing vids when I arrive at any site, but it's only background music.

I don't want to alienate any of my site visitors.. they are difficult enough to get as it is.

What is the consensus of opinion?

Do you click away as soon as you arrive on a site with autoplaying vids, or do you actually stay and explore?

    It depends of your site content. If it's a sales page, I'd prefer to set it to auto play.

      I always have something playing in the background (music, old Twilight Zone, South Park, etc.) and rather than search around for the mute or pause control, I just bounce.

      I find it very rude.

    I hate autoplay.

    However, you should ignore me and yourself and others too.

    Instead, test. Track conversion carefully. The beauty of the internet is that you don't have to guess.

    You're going to alienate visitors regardless of what you do.

    Test it with, test it without...

    And see which does better (especially if it's a VSL).

    Run a test and see if having the video autoplay or not makes a difference. Sometimes autoplay can enhance user experience, while other times it takes away.

    Some mixed replies, but then I guess the real answer is as suggested, to test both - with and without. Which is pretty obvious really.
