What's the best way to get started with freelancing?

Look at Upwork. From there you can see the skills that are in demand. Pick something that you are interested in and learn it.

You can learn pretty much anything on the internet. Go to Udemy, Youtube and check out blogs. Depending on the skill get some books on it.

Starting off you will find it hard to get people to choose you since you don't have ratings etc. make sure you have a good portfolio and you may have to work for a low price.

I understood your point, you dont like bidding site's like odesk and so on.

So why not you start your own brand of freelancing, I mean start a website and mention all your services and design your website very professionally so people will trust you and hire you..

You can start with local business owners, visit their place and tell your talent what you can do for them, this will help you to get rolling in and get experience as well.

Follow others freelancer people and find out what they are doing to get clients for them..

There are two ways you can go about this:

- go to upwork and then market your services there. In the beginning you should offer your services for a low price or even for free. Then you will earn trust. The trust is the key. If people realize that they can trust you and that your work is good then you will be referred to others and you will get job. Once you are trusted and respected you can set the price of your services at a high level.

- create your website. Describe your services. Make your services very, very cheap or even free. Then market your website all around the web. Use eveyrthing, posting and commenting on websites and forums, use ads on other websites, market it like hell everywhere. Once you get respect and trust you can set your price very high.

I don't understand. You've asked about affiliate marketing and other IM methods and mentioned not wanting to have a site...but you have an affiliate site in your sig. It's a good site so why not stick with that?

I ask because usually a freelancer is selling skills he already has. If you are an affiliate marketer wouldn't it be better to focus on increasing your visibility and income with affiliate product sales? Why would you want to start something else when you don't appear to have a skill you are ready to sell at this point?

As a freelancer you could be a writer or a programmer, a site builder or a graphic artist or a logo make or .... "Freelancer" is the method of offering your services but the services you can offer are widely varied.

I'm not sure who you are referring to but it's not me. I don't have an affiliate site in my sig and never have. This post is not about affiliate marketing. It's about freelancing(obviously). I tried affiliate marketing but it didn't work out for me. I want something a bit more stable and direct. I am not starting something else because I never earned any money with affiliate marketing.

One of the reasons I started this thread was to find out what skills I need to start freelancing and what is the best way to do that. I'm not here to battle people or defend myself. I'm simply asking for advice on how to go about getting skills and how to start something without it necessarily being a regular business.

Some people on here have been helpful and have offered some advice so I will look into that.

I talked to my mom's boyfriend and according to him being a graphic artist is a bad idea. There is too much competition from countries like India, China, Phillipines etc who are willing to do logos for a dollar. He made it seem like that was not a good way to go. He is definitely someone who knows what he is talking about. That's not to say it's not possible but that would be an uphill battle with lots of competition and there are probably much easier ways to do freelancing that will get me better results.

I don't really have any experience with this at all and no experience with any of the skills that one needs to do this.

Anybody could do that for anything. Just look up everything on google and facebook. Then what would be the point in having this forum? The point is to find out information from others who have experience so I can make an informed decision.The nerve of me for wanting to get information from people who know what they are talking about(obviously that's not everyone). That's the whole point of this forum. Maybe you should go someplace else.

As for the "world's standards" comment, terrorism exists in the world too does that make it ok? We should just accept whatever behavior is tossed our way? I don't think so.

Sorry - I must have clicked a link that wasn't connected to you - my bad. No idea how that happened. I thought it was odd as you've mentioned not having a site several times in posts here.

Point is this: freelancing is a GREAT way to make money when you have skills. If you want to know "should I try freelancing" - what skills do you have? That's what people are asking.

Look at it this way - if you don't know how to do anything that might be sold as a service....freelancing would mean learning to do something well and then learning to market it as a freelancer. Double whammy.

If that's the case, wouldn't it be better to stick with the CPA or affiliate marketing you mentioned before....and learn to build your site/blog to promote offers?

Are you a graphics artist - or skilled in photoshop, etc? What people are saying isn't meant to be "mean" and the quote above makes me wonder if you are quite young and perhaps that is the disconnect in this thread.

A lot of members hit the big two: free/cheap work on freelance sites to build your reputation score, combined with having a website selling your work.

The site is serving 3 purposes: credibility with new clients, cross-sell/up-sell to the clients who do use you on freelance sites, and a way for them to get in touch for future jobs.

I wouldn't do microjobs sites: use that time to build your skills so you can make a decent go of it on Odesk, Upwork, etc. If you're not confident charging more than $5 for a job, work on that confidence first.

I've hired some decent people from Upwork (mainly outsourcing Ghost Writers) but really like the filtering system they have over there.

How about heading over to these sites and exploring the competition? What are freelancers offering andhow does it compare with your current skills?

As others have said, any gaps in your knowledge can be filled quite quickly with the likes of Udemny and YouTube and take time to complete the 'tests' which the likes of Upwork have (grammar/english language etc.), that was something I would filter against straight away before choosing a freelancer.

Why not leverage on the skills you already have? That way you don't have to start from scratch and you can set yourself apart from the rest? If you can play an instrument or paint or if you have a great voice you can market those skills.

I have been in Upwork 2 years ago but stopped along the way... simply because I can't seem to win over a job. Some clients want to hire a freelancer with experience and time worked in Upwork. If you haven't work a single job in Upwork, it will be reflected in your history/account.

The only possible way is to offer a very cheap cost per hour/project... BUT, you can still see a lot of freelancers offer cheap cost per hour despite their experience and ratings. So, If I were the client/employer, I would choose them over to the new one who offers the same price but have no experience in Upwork or no ratings in their profile.

I have had that dilemma, but now i am trying to apply again with cheap offer, hoping someone will hire me. By the way, my expertise is building Email List through an extensive online research in LInkedin, Google, Online directories, company websites and any available resources online.

Its more like luck. When i started i needed 10 days to find a client for $2000+ a month. I simply made 5 profiles and applied with all of them!

Learn a skill that people are willing to pay for. This can be writing, graphic design or a host of other skills.

Go to the Warriors for Hire section of this forum and see what people are selling and at what rates.

Visit Upwork and Outsource and see what kind of jobs people are posting.

Choose one and then focus on learning that skill. You can take a Udemy course, watch YouTube videos, and read articles about what you want to learn.

Practice until you're good at the skill and then set up a website with samples.

Buy an ad here on Warrior Forum or start bidding at freelance sites.

In my opinion, you can learn whatever you want. You can learn something with big competition and you have to be really good or you have to be really good marketer OR you can learn whatever you'd like to do, which helps you being better at it.
And with learning...I would go for udemy(you can usually find even paid courses throughout the internet) or youtube guides, but it all depends on what you are going to do.
For example - Photoshop design - I would go for YT guides, I would read how-to's on the internet and I would definitelly train a lot.

You can start with any apps, where you are expert. There are many works, by which you can earn a good amount of money. Such as if you love to know the SEO, you can start practicing. When you will know the SEO, then you will know automatically what you should do & what your are doing. Thanks for your advance.

Everyone of us have some sort of skills i.e., inborn talents, learned skills etc. which we can put to use - you are no different. So now that we have concluded that you too have what it takes to partake on any one of the freelancing platforms i.e., freelancer.com, parttimerz.com, elance.com etc. the question is what skills would you like to offer?

Ask yourself, what is it that you excel at or have at an earlier age? It could be any number of things i.e. writing, math, music instruments, drawing, painting, etc. Once you discover your talents and passion perhaps, you then register at either one of the aforementioned freelancing platforms, complete your profile and start your freelancing career.

First of all the Odesk & Elance Merge to Upwork. That mean the odesk domain has been changed to Upwork on the other hand the Elance domain has beed changed to Upwork also. Anyway if you would like to work with the SEO, you can learn. You need to choose the Niche where you are interested. You can learn web development, SEO, Graphics Design & so on. Thanks
