How Would You Create an Authority Site?

While I've never built an authority site myself, I'll share with you some of the things I've noticed about successful authority sites:

- They all understand and cater to the needs of their target audience, and this is how they consistently create content to help their market.

- The content itself tends to be quite in-depth and detailed - it's not uncommon to see authority sites with pages of thousands of words. While content should only be as long as it needs to be, in most cases this leaves room for some lengthy posts.

- These sites are usually easy to navigate and have various pages organized by topic; this helps users to find the information they need easily.

Granted, there's so much more to building an authority site that provides useful information but I figured that's a good start.

But basically,
- create unique , great and useful content
- offer information that your competition don't have
- write with good grammar
- a tonnn of content

It's all about the content you offer. People will appreciate you if you create value and offer the right information.

1. Lots of good content that interlinks and links out to relevant content.

2. Lots of good links pointing at the site, not the sort you can make yourelf.

3. Time. Authority sites have to build trust, which can take years.

4. Patience!

Authority sites are worthless unless people know about it.

So its not just about creating a site.

It's also about having a constant stream of traffic there... which then goes on to share your content to *their* networks of worth.

So! Authority sites should have:

1.) Optin to build your list in the niche in question

2.) Quality content that is easily digestible

3.) Make it easy for visitors to share social content

4.) Shop for people to buy topics within authority niche

5.) Your credentials

Quality content is fundamental, but I also suggest to start in a niche. (do not start into a big market with tons of competition)

I think the closest thing I had to an authority site (excluding my blog of course!) was a fitness based website called RBR Fitness!

Sold it on a while ago but at the research stage it became obvious that if was just a general fitness site then I would never (ever!) get anywhere with it, the competition is just too great.

So I niched down and developed a site around Rowing, Biking and Running. Hence the 'RBR' bit in the site title.

Loads of useful content, articles for beginners and the more advanced, exercise charts etc.

The site did pretty well.

In hindsight though (which is always handy!) I would have concentrated on just one of those sports and turned up the authoritive level to max...

Even with just 3 sports, it was a little bit too general and traffic could have been easier.

My advice is to dig down (deep!) into a niche and only once you're established and happy with that topic consider expanding a bit more into other areas.

Post a high quality content and create a well written post.

Make a thorough research of your content.

Authority of a site depends on quality of its content and also quality of its backlink. When your create high quality content it will create good user engagement and also increase your blog authority. Backlinks also plays a major role as well. Also make sure that site age will also slightly impact your website authority.

I have done this, and it takes a long time.

Look at your niche.. I dunno, say dog training..

You'd break down the main topic into smaller subjects.. like how to house train a puppy.. leash control techniques.. and whatever else is relevant.

Then you need sites from 'good neighborhoods' to link to you.. A LOT.

And getting yourself mentioned in news websites won't hurt.

Is a site no one knows about really an "authority" site?

As I see it, this is a two step process.

1) Building the site

This is an open ended task. It's not something you do once, then call it a day.

2) Building the authority

Also an ongoing task, but one where you really need other people to participate. Things like:

> Commenting on posts/articles/videos
> Sharing same
> Linking to same
> Allowing access to their audiences (such as accepting a guest post or comment)
> Quoting your site as an authoritative source, with or without a link.

Bottom line, you don't "create an authority site."

You create a site which provides ongoing value to your chosen audience, and make enough people aware of it that some of them build the authority for you.

Information is only one sub-niche.

Authority sites can also be built around consumables.

To create an authority website in any niche you need:

1 - Top quality content. You won't get away with average posts or an outstanding post once a month. You'll need quantity and quality;

2 - You'll need solid backlinks, and those will take you time and money to get.

If I was starting today I would get a following on YouTube and then launch a forum off the back of my devoted followers.

Wrong forum for that kind of knowledge.

Excellent question. The answer to it depends on what your idea of an authority site is.

Some consider a high authority site to be any site with a high domain authority score. If that's your definition, score some backlinks from a few high domain authority sites. That will do the trick.

To others an authority site is a site that others in the same industry use as a resource page.

The best way to create that type of authority site is to study your buyer prospects to learn what problems they're dealing with. Then start creating content that helps them solve those problems. Don't just give them a 25,000 feet view of the answers they need either. Instead drill down into specifics. The deeper you go the better.

My favorite place to do this research is on niche forums, or even Quora.com.

Create a list of 20 questions you know your prospects have. Create a post for each using the questions as the post titles. Then pound 300 - 500 word answers to each question as the post content.

Doing that will get your site visitors to view you as an authority in your niche. In online marketing, teachers are authorities.

I would strive to make it a three fold site.

First, I would have a website loaded with the best most informative evergreen content on the topic of choice as possible.

Content that would still be valid ten years from now.

Then I would attach a blog to it--so that I could write about new things happening in the niche.

Things like new products coming out, or other sites that I like in the niche.

Then, when, hopefully the site got enough traffic I would start a forum.

To me this would be a true authority site.
