How To Become Successful Online.

Choosing Your Niche

The most important step you need to take is to decide what area of online opportunity is most beneficial to you.

Ask yourself these 4 questions:

Q. What are your desires?

Q. What skills do you have or can you acquire (or hire) that will help you build your online business?

Q. What makes you happy?

Q. What don't you like?

Scheduling For Success

Every successful business (online or off) begins with a plan that includes time frames. An example for someone just starting out could be something like this:

Step 1: The first thing you need to know is what niches are available, then choose one niche to pursue.
Task: Find and build a list of all online opportunities.
Time Frame: 1 Day (or what ever fits your schedule)

It doesn't matter how many opportunities you find. Once the scheduled time is reached, that's it, that's the list you will work with. Choose one niche from the list and move on.

Once you know the niche, you need to find an expert to help you in that niche.

Step 2: Who are the top experts in my niche?
Task: Research the experts and look for testimonials (due diligence).
Time Frame: 1 Day

By the end of this time frame you need to choose ONE expert to follow.

Step 3: Follow that ONE expert's advice.
Task: Whatever the expert recommends, follow it like your life depends upon it (your business life actually does).
Time Frame: Schedule the actual days and times of day you will dedicate to the experts plan. If the expert didn't already do so, break the tasks down into manageable time slots.

Once you reach the end of a time slot, stop and move on the the next task. If an incomplete task is absolutely required before you can begin the next task (it rarely is), then you'll have to re-adjust your entire schedule. This is a learning experience that will help you better manage your time frames going forward.

Persistence

Don't give up. Follow the plan laid out by your expert, and adjust your time frames along the way. In the end, you will learn that either the opportunity is not as good as you expected, or is about what you expected, or is better than you expected.

In any case you will have learned a whole lot more than you knew before trying.

If you quit, you'll learn nothing.

By following a plan and keeping within the time frames, you won't have time to be distracted by all the new shiny objects in your inbox (the newest, greatest, marketing opportunities). Good!

In fact, once you've chosen your expert, I recommend unsubscribing from ALL other marketing solicitations - including mine if I send one.

You won't have the time to manage multiple opportunities, and the above time frame management will prove this to you very quickly.

Staying mono-focused on a single plan and following it through to success or failure is the smartest thing you can do with your time (and money).

Stick to the plan and you will either be successful or you will fail. It's that simple.

If you're successful, find ways to expand on your success. Congratulations!

If you fail, you've learned what doesn't work (for you) for a reason. Now you'll know what to avoid, how to avoid it, and how to set-up and manage a plan that teaches you these things. If that happens, congratulate yourself, and go back to step 1.

~

To your great success!

    Hi Tim,

Question #3 is the key for me.

I ask clients or readers or hell, anybody, what feels most fun to them.

    Follow your fun.

Money comes and goes, then, increases over time. Ditto with traffic and fame or whatever.

But a fun, happy life, that is what we are after. The fun we have spending money, the freedom we feel, these are the emotions we seek.

So follow your fun. Follow your happiness.

I did this and it worked A-OK Going from struggling sap to retired to the tropics, through blogging.

    Signing off from sunny NYC.

    Tim,

It's too bad that you didn't mention a thing about finding where there is demand for a product or service in the marketplace. Just researching business opportunities and experts doesn't tell you what prospects really want.

To me, that is probably the very first critical task that every new business owner ought to understand prior to attacking a niche. If you don't identify and locate an audience, and find out what they want, you risk spending time and money selling things based on your own "hunch" or guess that they will be successful sellers.

This is all about your prospects and customers and how you can satisfy their wants, needs, and desires. So you'd better learn that first, even before you "pick a niche" or you risk going into a niche without a clue about what's already selling, what has failed, and even if it is a money niche, or too much competition.

No matter how many motivational advice somebody gives, only a certain percentage of people will follow. And somehow *mysteriously* the numbers remain the same from year to year... and decade to decade. In a way it's almost pointless to discuss motivation/success to a newbie (or pro). Only 5% will take it to heart and act upon it. And even if this 5% didn't read this motivational post, they have the ability to motivate themselves to the highest degree. Thus creating a master marketer out of their own selves'.

    That's my take on it.

Thank you for your insight, Randall. Interesting to know. I have always thought that motivational advice was effective for certain types of people, but hadn't really looked into it.

I've always been self-motivated, and I learned that to become successful, you need to follow a plan completely, on a schedule, and tweak the plan along the way. It's one of the major reasons why franchise businesses out perform non-franchise businesses so often.

Like the time-tested saying goes, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

You said it right there. You've always been self-motivated, and it shows, because you're taking the necessary steps to become successful online. You have your own site, you participate on the forum, and you're continuing your online marketing education. And that's whats up! You're one of the 5%.

My point in my previous post was that, don't spend time motivating. Get the money and provide for yourself and family.

I've even seen the late great, super guru Gary Halbert get upset once because of an entrepreneur he was consulting for didn't take his PERSONAL classified marketing advice.

The client *kind of* dismissed it. You just gotta go for the paper, and wait for those to come to YOU for advice. And when they do..... hella charge them with a mega consulting fee. I bet you they'll listen then.

      Great post here.

To boldy go where no one else goes. LOL>

Why do you think bigger time marketers share some of their most intimate secrets. They know about 1% of the ears listening will actually get off their ass and implement. Actually its more like 10% of that 1%..... LOL

I like the post. Probably the most valuable point for new beginners is to "stop thinking you will be rich overnight". We need to provide value and good information in order to make money. Been rich or having a passive income is the end result, first step is to deliver good valuable information that can solve a problem in your niche market.
