How do you protect your pitch?

I have an idea but it's for the cell phone market. i wouldn't say it's an app because it might end up being a combination of software and hardware.

The problem is I have the basics worked out, but I will ultimately need a tech person to create it for me.

I'm not saying I'm onto something special here, but I feel the question is still valid regardless.

How do you protect your idea if you need others to make it happen?

A patent takes money and time and a lot of detail to explain what it is. I haven't got that far yet. Ideally, I need a trustworthy tech source to pitch it to and flesh it out some more.

You see all these great ideas on the Internet and it makes you wonder how someone with deep pockets isn't stealing them and getting them to market in a tenth of the time the average guy would take.

Writers have their work automatically copy written, so that's good for them, but this has me stumped.

Is there something in the law that covers an idea in its infancy?

You can't patent an idea. You can't protect an idea. To get a patent you need to be able to describe the product well enough that others can replicate it and get the same thing.

Why don't people steal ideas from others? Well they do... but the majority never do anything with their ideas, both the person that has the idea, or someone wanting to use someones idea.

Just get to work and produce whatever it is you want to produce. Stop worrying about protecting the idea, it's not going to happen.

    Hey usgom,

Yep iAmNameLess is just keeping it real.

Even if you blasted out the gates last week with a hit you would still be getting copied to death this week.

Just focus on keeping it as unique and generous as possible so people will remain loyal to you.

You are in an exciting position so just focus on getting what you have to market.

Stuff you can not control do not lose sleep over.

Good luck, we are rooting for you.

I agree with those above - people will copy cat you - but you will succeed by taking action and more action than anyone else. Obviously your idea must be good but sounds like you are flushing it out. Good Luck!

    Hi all,
I used to have a similar view with my free gifts that I gave away to build my list, and at the end of the day I think you need to understand that if you have 1) a good idea, and 2) the motivation to see it through and do EVERYTHING in your power to crush the competition, you probably don't need to worry about protecting your idea or product. Once you start making decent money from it you can engage professionals to help you protect your investment, but up front my experience is that it's wasted money (been there done that).
