Hi everyone I'm setting up my first website with wordpress and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with setting everything up correctly from email software integration to structuring my website so its displayed correctly. Could anyone offer any advice to make this process smoother.... I feel like I have a million things to do.

If setting a website using wordpress is hard for you then I don't think IM is your best choice.

Making a website with wordpress is the first and easiest step on your journey.

Make sure you do it by yourself !! no need to outsource it.

Don't give up. Winners never quit. If you're having difficulty, go to Youtube for free tutorials. There is a ton of stuff there.

    And remember, winners never quit!

Do not get discouraged and do not give up. Even though WP sites are considered relatively easy to set up there is indeed a learning curve if you are new to this.

Something such as selecting a theme may seen over whelming at first but remember you can change them with just a couple of clicks at any time so you are not locked into using any specific theme. Sometimes with certain themes you may need to tweak things to make the site look right.

Keep it simple at first as you can get more creative later. I would also suggest using some WP security plug-ins as WP sites do get hacked unfortunately.

You've received some good advice. This person gave the best:

    The thing is, rabit holes:
    • Books have been written on web design.
    • Books have been written on logo design.
    • Books have been written on the psychology of colour in logo design.
If internet marketing is a field of grass, it is the biggest field of grass you'll ever see, and on that field are rabbit holes, and each rabbit hole leads to another field of grass, on which you'll see many rabbit holes, all leading to other fields of grass, all of them with rabbit holes. When you dive into one subject in internet marketing, you have revealed to you a universe of other subjects.

You'll receive mostly good, mostly well-intentioned advice in this thread, but almost none of it you'll be able to make head nor tail of (those rabbit holes), and all of it may be (quite likely is) useless to you. I could, for instance, sit here for the next 8 months and explain how to develop a professional web design. You would walk away knowing more than you ever expected - or wanted - to know. But what about the kicker? There's always a kicker.

The kicker: if your business plan is poor, no amount of professional web design will be of help. You cannot put a pig in a dress and expect that pig to win Miss World.

The most likely thing in the world right now, the absolute safest bet going, is that you have the wrong business plan and the wrong domain for that business plan and you're going to dedicate the next few months of your life to a venture that was destined to failure from the get-go.

We call that the hard truth. It isn't meant to be unkind. It's meant to save you. To save you from a futile investment of time and both mental and physical resources. I could be wrong. I'm probably not. Not if you're new to IM. And not if the last 22 years have taught me anything: newcomers to IM tend to fail when it comes to a business model and a business plan for that model.

    So, what do you do?

Before you is a mountain. We'll call that mountain Mount IM. Successful IMers are sat on the top looking down; everyone else is making the trek uphill, and even below them you have legions of people who either cannot see the mountain or are simply clueless on how to climb it. And, as you've probably guessed, this is no ordinary mountain. Rabbit holes. On every field, rabbit holes.

What you do - is begin climbing. And your first step is to determine . . . a workable business model.

You're best bet is to either:

    1) Learn Wordpress, all about how to use the platform, and plugins that make it easier for you (ex: Optimize Press)

    or....

    2) Cough up a few hundred dollars to have someone create the perfect website for you

I think you must know what to do. Though you made it for yourself. So, next you should do yourself. Give up a try furthermore.

Quick bit of advice, never upgrade straight away to the latest WordPress version when they release it. It takes a bit of time for all the widgets/plugins etc to be brought up to date. Trust me, let my loss of access to the WordPress dashboard and if editing MySQL tables scares the bejesus out of you, let this be a warning to you

YouTube has some amazing tutorials, simply type the question of what you want to know into the YouTube search bar. How do I install Pretty Link widget for example. 99% of what you need to know is up there.

It is overwhelming at the beginning, but just take it 1 step at a time. Back when I lived in the UK I had the role of training teachers who had worked without technology for close to 30 years, how to incorporate electronic whiteboards, blogging, video editing, animation, data collection tools, databases etc into the curriculum. Believe me if they can do it, you can do it.

Map out a clear plan of what you want you site to do, who you want it to serve. If you don't have the time, you can get a basic WP install and template installed for a few bucks on Fiverr. I'm not a fan of this method, as having this skill under your belt will serve you for the rest of your life

    Best of luck matey.
