Where to next? Expansion advice.

I started an online outdoors themed website a few years back as a hobby based on an email list I had created. In 2012 I created social media presences on FB and then a year or two later, Instagram. At the same time I started offering decals, hats and shirts for sale.

Thru organic word of mouth and target marketing I've grown the social media accounts to around 50k each (100k total followers) plus smaller twitter and pinterest accounts and get terrific participation from our fans on what we post.

For the most part we've been very selective on how much promo we do for our products and services. I do see orders each time we post to social media but we also lose people when we try straight promotional posts. I think this is in part b/c our audience enjoys the LACK of "selling" that is so prevalent on these mediums. We've tried different contest type promotions but I feel it's not really generated much in sales compared to the effort and cost of goods given away. We post everyday something of interest and it seems to work great for participation and new fans.

Advertising on these is extremely expensive vs. the conversion and my feeling is people don't like to "leave" FB or Instagram for a website. The e-commerce carts (we have one) that offer FB sales I think are clunky and not conducive to a good user experience. Social Media has been great for building a dedicated audience but not so much in converting them to sales.

On the paid search front I've tried Google Adwords (keyword & display networks) and most recently Bing and have found the traffic/clicks to be entirely too expensive for the conversion, neither engine has been effective.

The products designs are unique, priced correctly and have a huge pool of potential customers. We receive rave reviews (and sales) when people become aware of the products so I know there is a huge potential here based on the sales to date and feedback. We have a HUGE amount of repeat business.

I guess my question is what is the best method(s) to reach MORE people either in targeted web traffic or other means? I am at a bit of a loss as I figured at this point the social media would drive the sales once it reached a certain point. This has been the case in the sense that it's taken us this far but I'd like to take it to the next level and the effort we are putting into social media now I don't see it growing sales more than it does. Unless...I'm missing something?

What suggestions do you have?

If your facebook fans do not like being sold on your fanpage then why don't you create a lead magnet and get them to optin to your list.

You can then sale to them via email rather than your facebook fan page.

  • I agree with webmarke, perhaps the ideal place for you to sell is thru email marketing. It is a common issue with almost everyone, especially when it comes to selling in social media. Most people like the content but once they see it is an outright promotional post, they tend to skip on that one.

Collecting their emails can be easier since you already have a large audience. You just need to lead them to a landing page with a free content as an opt-in and promote through email marketing. Instagram is also an option if you want to sell, personally I think people who are really into your niche on IG will follow you and will have a higher chance of purchasing (just my opinion). But anyway, hope this helps!

The other warriors are right. You shouldn't keep trying to sell on Facebook (or Instagram), you'll simply look pushy, which is something you experienced already.

Build a list instead and I suggest you do that through contests, Facebook tabs - which you can embed or redirect to your squeeze page where you offer something VALUABLE and DESIRABLE for FREE.

With such a big fan base (well done btw!) you should have lots of people wanting to have your free gift.

Once on your list, that's where the fun begins. If you build your list through a contest where you offer a shirt (for example) you can them email them a simple: "Winners are X and Y, Congratulations! If you're not one of them but still want this awesome tshirt, here's where you can still get it at a discounted price"

I have found out that this works really good, especially when the designs are really good.

I also recommend that you start segmenting your list based on their actions. If someone buys a tshirt, he better end up on a buyers list. From there you can and should segment further because you can and should send them higher ticket offers. Like a hoodie, for example.

As a way to grow on social media, apart from what you're already doing, I can suggest finding pages of similar interests and doing cross promotions.
For instance, if you're in fashion, you can contact Instagram models to make a post about your products. Just an example but you get the point.

On Facebook you can contact other Pages, Groups and find a mutual beneficial way to promote your products.

You shouldn't stop to Facebook and Instagram, you could even try YouTube both for cross promotions but also other free and paid methods to grow your list...There's so much you can do!

I'll stop here cause I'm getting overly excited here but I hope this gives you some ideas and wish you all the best with your business!

  • These are great suggestions, I'm going to push forward and report back. Any suggestions or thoughts on purchasing a outdoors/fishing email list to augment what I already have?

Based on the fact that your site is "Ooutdoor" themed, I would think that pinterest would be a good place to start. My suggestion would be to go over to warrior plus, and look up the vendor "sojourn" aka Erica Stone and get one of her pinterest products, either pinplosion or pinfabulous. If you are not sure which one would suit your needs just shoot her an email.
