Is this standard for affiliates?

I have an affiliate who is asking for details of every converted customer they send and what that customer purchased. Is that standard for an affiliate to expect the details of individual customers purchasing habits? I am concerned about the customers privacy rights once they are my customers. Any thoughts?

As an affiliate they have the right to ask for it.

But just don't give personal informations.

You are responsible on the privacy and the confidentiality of your clients.

Do you have a information sharing agreement with the affiliate? If not they are not entitled to that information, though you may wish to share regardless.

  • Personal details should remain confidential. Is that your own affiliate system or are you using third parties such as Clickbank or JVZoo?

It's a pretty common request. Think about it this way:

They were the affiliate's leads first, not yours.

They could be trying to segment them off of future promotions.

They could be trying to segment them off into a buyers list.

They could be trying to get metrics on how to improve their own process.

All of which is beneficial to you in the long term.

Just give them the list of customer emails at the very least. It will help them a lot and build a lot of trust/respect with you and your affiliates. I usually don't send them transactional details however. I may include the average purchase price of the group or the offer itself.

The affiliate is sending to his list or is using his money to advertise your products. Either he wants facts in order to know what ads are working...or he doesn't trust your tracking and reporting...or both.

With many programs, an affiliate has the ability to login and SEE what was purchased....not the personal/contact info of the buyer but enough to know which ads are working for him and which products are best sellers.

I would not give the customer emails out - I doubt you have a right to do that unless its written that way in your privacy statement.

To me, this seems pretty simple . . . maybe I'm missing something though.

Most privacy policies state that the business will not share, rent, or sell personal information obtained. So if this were my statement, I would abide by it.

I would tell the affiliate the following (but only for those sales attributed to his affiliate account):

    Buyer #1 . . . Purchased abc product @ $9.97 on 3/17/16
    Buyer #2 . . . Purchased qrs product @ $12.95 on 4/4/16
    Buyer #3 . . . Purchased xyz product @ $14.99 on 4/20/16

If you know which web page the buyer came from, I think that would be OK to share since it does not divulge any personal info.

I personally would not give any more information out to the affiliate as you have said you would protect the privacy of your customers.

If you don't have a privacy policy, you should implement one immediately.

Thanks Steve. Would you tell the affiliate Buyer#1 name?

No, it's normal to ask conversion rate and details such as this, i've never heard of expecting this much information though.

It's certainly something a skilled affiliate would do but not that standard.

They probably just want to segment their list into buyers and freebie seekers.

As long as you give just name and what person purchased you don't brake any privacy rules, affiliates need that for statistic obviously.
