Focus on places where people gather in the niche of your product and offer you a chance to promote your product.

4 Examples would be Linked Groups, Goggle+ groups, Facebook groups, and Forums (advertise via forum signature).

The key is in marketing. Perhaps creating a Facebook Page, and plaster your kindle book on the Page's cover. Then join as many "similar" book groups as possible. Then try to befriend the followers in those group by sending them friend request. Also commenting to posts within book groups as much as possible (but without over doing it). This is a fairly inexpensive way to get fans and create awareness for your kindle book.

You can reach out to bloggers in your niche and give them ARCs (Advanced Review Copies)

If they like your work, they'll post a review and you get both a backlink (SEO benefit) and direct traffic

Another approach you can take is to do blogger outreach and get them to write a foreword for you.

In exchange, you link to their sites in your book.

There are so many ways you can promote for free in addition to the KDP Select promo period.
