Marketing Theory Debate

So i've come to the point where i've decided to master a different channel of getting customers/marketing. I'm going to start placing PPC ads to generate leads..

I wont say i've come into a problem, but more of an internal debate..

Wouldn't internet marketers all use Advertising as part of their arsenal to generate income? I mean by the name "internet marketer" and from what i understand about marketing, isn't it safe to assume that all internet marketers are really good copywriters and Ad makers? Wouldnt they have to be, to be considered an internet marketer?

What are your thoughts?

Figure out what works for you, focus on that. I'm terrible at PPC personally. SEO/buying display advertising/email work for me. Even in the "heyday" of Google adwords, I personally couldn't really make much money with it. I just moved on and went back to SEO. But I've been doing SEO since the inception of Google, so...

I consider myself to be an "Affiliate Marketer." I really focus on thinking about things like "what would a person who is considering this offer type into Google?" and then analyzing that data. I consider myself to be a decent copywriter but I don't think I'm the best or anything...

As far as display ads... I'm going to be honest here. I usually just look at other people's ads, pick one I like, then create my own version of that. Obviously I test lots of ads since click rates and conversion rates vary wildly.

So no, on both points, those are not the best assumptions to make.

Define "internet marketer." I consider the definition of internet marketer pretty broadly. So I consider people who have gigantic fanpages on Facebook and make money from them to be internet marketers. Those people don't really need either skill you mentioned.

It would help to learn copywriting and a great skill to master. But it can be outsourced to someone that has better skills then you have, it should make you more profits. If a marketer can not write good copy his sales page wont convert and leave money on the table. The copywriting forum has some great copywriters there but most just lurk now. It would also be a great source for newbies to visit, so they can learn and understand good copy. Same with Ad makers it may be essentially the same IMO but it can make and break a product you are trying to sell. If you can recognize good copy it will be a big help in choosing a good copywriter. Just my thoughts on this topic.

There's a lot of IM niche stuff going on there. I found a course on general sales copy writing to be very helpful. I don't want to recommend it because it's old.

No. Just like any other industry, a lot of internet marketers outsource theses tasks.

Yeah a "Marketer" entails a lot of different things...not just Ad and Copy writing. It involves developing a Product, exploiting marketing channels, developing certain mediums to promote your products, actual brand and funnel creation etc..etc..

Many evaluate their Strengths and Weaknesses as a Marketer and some decide to outsource things that they are either not strong at doing or just do not have the time to perform. Which can be things like Copy Writing and Ad creation..or Product Creation or brand Creation or funnel creation etc..

PPC does involve quite a bit of copywriting, particularly the principles of writing headlines and call to actions.

However, it also requires an understanding of cashflow, tracking and market research. You can probably add in things like email squeeze optimization and retargeting as well.

    No, not at all.

Technically, and by definition, anyone that throws up an offer online and promotes it is an "Internet marketer." But to assume that person is a "really good copywriter and ad maker" is really stretching it. He/she may know nothing about creating good copy and ads.

    You're assuming waaaaaaaaay too much!
