Do what you HATE and the money will follow

I don't know who first coined it but one popular saying in entrepreneurial circles is "Do what you love and the money will follow" The problem is that in most cases this is just plain wrong.

Let me explain what I mean with a fiction example let's pretend your a keen model train collector who suffers quite badly from gout.

You love model trains but hate your painful gout and the restricting it put on your life.

You subscribe to do what you love theory you will try to make money in the model train niche and in my opinion you will probably struggle.

Yes some people can build up considerable enthusiasm about the latest model TR76G Locomotive but it not the same as being in real pain and being desperate for a solution.

In our scenario you would be much better off choosing the gout niche all the advantages of passion would still apply if you have gout you will be passionate about find a cure or some relief from the pain.

The big advantage however is the desperation of your prospects gout can be a very painful condition and this makes what I call a desperate niche.

Desperate niche are where the money is in IM desperate people are buyers.

People in pain or with embarrassing and socially inhibiting conditions or strong psychical urges or mental compulsion will buy from you time and time again.

Such niches include things like

Gout
Acne
Impotence
weight loss
Thrush
and many many more

These niches and many other like them convert like crazy often as high as 10% and can make you a lot of money

Yeup a "desperate niche" as you coined it should give quicker results. The point of doing something you love is longevity. Produceing content for something you hate could get very tedious.

So probably a both and attitude would work here.

I see your point there but the saying "Do what you love and the money will follow" applies on a whole different level, most of the people who are doing what they love are not doing it for the sake of money but for the passion they posses for it. The thing is that when you do something that you love the outcome tends to get genuine and unique and the success it may bring would be of astounding proportions. And if you are doing something for money (whether primarily for money or money being the major part of the reason you are doing it) then the theory of passion doesn't quite apply there. In your context it sounds reasonable but I believe that if you are doing something that you hate, it won't last for long. Work, IMHO is not solely for money, it should give somewhat of a purpose to your life if you know what i mean.

"Where we talk about making money" is the sub header for the main discussion forum after all.

These desperate niches are ideal for mini sites and set and go blogs conduit sites bum marketing etc.

If you want to blog or make a site about your passion or hobby as a long term project that fine as well.

The more money you make marketing to the right niches the more time and freedom you can generate to do what you love.

Sometimes life love and money are all about compromise.
