Do I need to have an ssl certificate on a website with a lead capture form on it? I want to capture emails, names and phone numbers

    SSL is mostly for eCommerce transactions. For lead capture, it's recommended to have separate privacy policy and terms of services HTML pages on your web host, with links to them normally at the bottom of the lead capture page. It doesn't hurt to have SSL for lead capture pages as well. Google values SSL, Privacy Policy, and Terms of Services.

    Technically, you do not need an SSL certificate due to you have content based websites where user’s personal information (like - credit card detail, social security number, etc.) is not involved.
    But, it is advisable to secure your website with an SSL certificate. You should consider that SSL stands on security, authentication and assurance. When users see the website is secured and authenticated with HTTPS that they trust on you.
    Ranking in the search engine is most important factor to get more traffic and increase sales. Google loves security and also gives ranking advantage to HTTPS secure website.

    Not necessarily. SSL certificates are used for the purpose of securing transactions especially with sites catering payments, etc. Though having these gives you added points in search engines. To capture phone numbers, emails, etc maybe try an opt-in page for your audiences.

    No you don't need SSL for lead capture pages. If you want to boost visitor confidence by placing a scrolling SSL icon on the bottom right of the screen... that's fine. Comodo can do this for you. Whenever they drag their mouse over your icon, it will show that the page is secure, and will display details about your site - credible details that you are a real company in good standing (hopefully). But SSL is typically used on payment pages where they have to enter their credit card info. It isn't fully secure though until your browser bar has "https://" in front of the domain name.

    Either information is just content based or confidential (which is to be entered through user/customer) is not a matter. But as per current trend, most popular browsers are giving error if website has no ssl certificate. So I think it is good to have ssl certificate to save website reputation and information privacy. And if you want to go for it then don't purchase it from novice ssl providers in place of trusted providers like ClickSSL, SSL.com etc.
