Default Article marketing vs. Press release - How are they any different?

hello all,

I have been training my article marketing skills to black belt level and am starting to think it's time to start practicing a new skill - press releases.

However, I am curious as to how they are any different.

To the search engine, a 400 word article is a 400 word article, so how could a press release be any different(talking about SEs here) than a article in similar length?

I know press releases get distributed, however you can also distribute your articles throughout the whole article network + RSS feed sites. Is it that the distribution is THAT MUCH BETTER?

I see that a big name site for RPs is PRlog.org. Do they have more search engine power than a competitive article site like Ezinearticles?

So basically what I am trying to find out here is, what the advantages of PRs are vs the advantages of articles?

Thank you so much for your time! I hope to see some good replies. I apreciate it!

-Dan
