Can a niche be too big?

I looking at breaking into the Back Pain niche. I'm up against a ton of sites, but most of them are garbage. The only entrenched sites are generic medical sites like WebMd and mayo clinic.

I have written an Ebook on women's back pain with my father and am thinking about building an email list through a blog/squeeze page.

Together, my father and I have more than 60 years of medical knowledge and experience. I have no doubt that we can build credibility.

My only concern is getting seen among the tons and tons of sites and getting people to understand that the information we provide is much more valuable.

    Hey,

To be seen in the mountain of garbage you need to do what they are not! Don't follow the herd, be the "sore thumb" that sticks out and for a good reason in this scenario!

There are many things you can do some include:-

        1. Using a different marketing angle. You see a lot of marketers use the same generic angle.
        2. Produce the best content you can, aim to help people first then reap the money reward most marketers do it the other way around, the wrong way!
        3. Build positive expectancy and really market with people's emotions in mind!

I think your market is pretty narrow already..... Women's Back Pain...

You may be able to make it even more specific...

Exactly what does your "Customer Avatar" look like?

Remember: If you're selling to everyone, you're selling to no one.

Ok that's good to know. Then my question becomes: do I focus on women only?

      Or both women and men?

Can you offer more value than the other sites?
IMO if you can, and you can drive traffic then you have nothing to worry about

I would go at this differently...focus on getting testimonials/social proof.

If your method really does work, then go out and get some early candidates who you can run through your method and then have them vouch for you once it works.

Once you have those, run all of your publicity (blogging, Youtube videos, Facebook videos and ads, etc...) based on getting results.

The one surefire way to rise above the noise in any given desperate market like back pain is to show proof.

Yes! the more broad the niche, the more hard to make yourself stand out as an authority in your niche. It is always best to narrow down, then after you succeed , you can then expand into other areas of your niche.

Besides testimonials from people that have overcome back pain using your method, I think you need to be associated with the medical profession some how.

Are you or your father a doctor? Can you get a doctor's endorsement for your method?

There are so many people making outrageous medical claims online these days . . . I think it is important that you prove some authority on the subject.

Also, a word of caution. In order to stay on the good site of the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), you'd better have ready scientific testing and proof for whatever you claim about your back pain advice. You should not mislead or confuse your customers in any way.

If your book is really good then promote on forums related to medical subjects and also use Facebook Ads. When I say promote I mean be persistent and promote like hell! Create good landing page which will make people realize that you have something really good for sale! Then promote, promote, promote! Get affiliates to promote your product!

Well if a niche is "too big".... is it really a niche? I do like your ebook idea though. "Back Pain for Women" is unique, and doesn't sound too broad. Sites like WebMD and Mayo Clinic are broad medical sites. And since you said the competitors marketing sucks..... you can go into that niche (along with backend products), and destroy them. The medical and legal field are finicky. Make sure you have disclaimers and insight (or a foreword from your dad, along with credibility documents) to let people know that you're not offering a "cure"... or trying to suggest one. Make it very specific.

Well it depends on your approach to building up your business.
If you are using a blog for promotion, you are going to need a lot of content and you may run out of ideas fast. However, if you are using list marketing, capturing leads and promote through emails, then I think the niche will be just nice In fact, the smaller the better.

The rule of thumb is the bigger the niche the bigger the pay off. But now you have to look at what they are selling on the internet and sell that but at a better price. The niche is huge but how many buy things for that niche and if they do what are they buying. After you figure this out you can couple this with your ebook offer. First you can offer your book as a free offer or even a discounted price offer and once they see your book as value they will trust you and then buy more of what your experience recommends. See what your competitors are selling and try to replicate that only better. Advertise your blog on any/all social sites you have and every time you make a new post update a brief taste on your social sites so your can get new followers. Put banners on your blog leading to your free ebook/email list and soon you can start an audience. The best way to grow a list is offer something free first then hammer in the products with price tags.
