Top 9 Blogging Basics for Beginners

So you want to try your hand at blogging. You’ve been thinking about it for a while… Those creative strings have been tugging at the forefront of your mind, just itching to get some words down on paper… or on your screen should we say.

Unlike when blogs first hit the scene and were few and far between, nowadays we are flooded with blogs on each and every topic you could imagine. Everyone is a leader in their field, each with a decisive and informed point of view. This is the world you are heading into – and like any battle, it’s good to be prepared.

We’ve got some simple tips to check off your list before you enter the big wide world of blogging.

1. Know Your Subject Matter
Pretty simple to start with huh – write about what you know! There is no point floundering on topics that you have either no interest or knowledge in. No matter what the subject matter – if you have found yourself your little niche that you excel in, get blogging about it.

2. Take Great Photos
A picture says a thousand words – so learn how to take a great one! Our smartphones and the endless world of image apps make taking a great photo a much easier task than it was five years ago. No longer do we need to be professional photographers to get a good shot. (Thank you filters).

3. Be Spontaneous, Yet Have a Plan
There is nothing better than waking in the middle of the night when a creative streak hits and getting your thoughts down. Take those moments of spontaneity and run with them. Yet in the background, make sure you have a goal you are heading towards, or an overarching model you are working with in your blog. It will help keep your message and tone consistent with your readers.

4. Give Credit
If you are quoting another blogger or referencing their material, be sure to give credit – just do it. It’s blogging law.

5. Beef Up Your Blog Before Going Live
Get a good stockpile of articles on your blog before you advertise it to the world. No one wants to head to your blog to read the same first article. You’ve just lost a reader.

6. Think Outside the Box
Blogging is an amazing way to express yourself and your opinions – so don’t be afraid to push the envelope. Explore topics that intrigue, entertain, inspire and educate you. Chances are if it challenges you, it will challenge your readers.

7. Keep a Notepad and Pen Handy (or your phone)
Ideas can strike at any time, so be prepared.

8. Post Quality Content, Not Noise
Only post articles you feel have worth. Otherwise, keep the white noise. It’s better to post quality over quantity any day.

9. Get Sociable and Share!
Get your blog out there amongst your social networks. Get involved in your blogging community, comment on others’ blogs and get involved in the conversations. If you are a worthy and active participant, the more likely people are to read and share your blog with others.

Last but not least – just make a start!

You’ll never know until you try...

Learn from it but also start taking action so you can get results. Then come back here and show the community what you have achieved and hopefully inspire other people too!

      Hey Daniel,

Definitely reading top blogs is a great way to keep learning about a subject and getting different perspectives on things. I normally use feedly to aggregate RSS and then read top blogs in a variety of topics within internet marketing.

      Cheers

Love the last quote. I got a good quote from Robert T kyosaki that helped me to take more action

"when you come to the boundaries of what you know, it is time to make some mistakes."

I don't know about you but it really motivates me to take more risk and more actions.

      Definitely!

Apart from using Feedly to read the latest news I also subscribe to my favourite blogs/websites so I get an email when a new post is up.

You can leverage those email notifications to be one of the first people to comment the post and hopefully drive some traffic to your website in the process (but make sure your comment adds value!).

    Very useful tips, thanks.

Although regarding your point about quality over quantity, I believe you should be aiming for BOTH. I recommend writing at least one blog post/article daily. This is just because the search engines like websites that always provide new content, and because it will also position you as a leader in that niche.

Though, like you say, you absolutely have to make sure you're writing quality content. Though if you are passionate and knowledgeable about your niche (which you should be), then you should know enough to write something quality every day.

Nice list. I'd like to expand a little on #4, about giving credit.

Not only is it the right thing to do, but if done properly, it can seriously enhance your own stock.

When you quote a noted authority properly, you put yourself on the same level, in effect saying "Joe Expert said this on his blog [quote], and he's right about that." Or "Joe Expert said [quote], and I disagree. Here's why..."

Much more effective in building authority than simply stealing someone else's work and trying to pass it off as your own. Smart readers will recognize the shifting tone and start asking themselves "if he's so damn smart and successful, how come I've never heard of him before?"

Do this often enough, and you start getting the reputation of, as one of my Texan friends says, "big hat, no cattle."

Love the tips, though think you should start getting out there letting people know you and your blog exist straight away, as long as you create content consistently for it. Yes may only have a couple of posts to start with, but keep posting every few days and it soon builds up.

Tip #7 is a good one, and one I use regularly. I used to always carry a little notebook and pen around with me to jot down ideas and information when I was out and about, to save until I got home. Now, I do it with the notepad app on my smart phone. I love that app. It minimizes the things I need to carry around with me, and it's so convenient, because it's always there, in or near my hand, anywhere I go. Everyone who does business online, be it ecommerce, blogging, or anything else should really make more use of the notepad app on their phone. It's a terrific addition to modern living, especially for entrepreneurs and creative types.

These are great tips for anyone looking to join the blogging world. I want to add one important thing everyone should have to make it big and it's passion. Your niche should be about your passion or hobby because it will be easier to succeed.

I disagree, you can succeed without passion for your niche or you can also fall in love with your niche over time..

You're right that it makes work fun!

I think passion for your subject is important, but agree you can succeed if you don't care for your niche too much. However a lack of passion for your niche would surely make it harder to get up and work at it every day...just another boring job! Having some sort of like and desire for the niche you are working in has to play an important part, even if it is just a determination to want to succeed within it.
