Do niche sites still work?

Hi there,

I have a quick question for you. I hope I don't piss anybody, I just want an honest answer from you who have experienced in the internet marketing game.

I've been researching many blogs and taking courses like Affilorama where they basically claim to build a niche website and promote products.

Do this model still works or is something that used to work years ago?

If I build a website about let's say, lava lamps for example and I write content regularly, rank it and all that stuff. Would this be profitable if I promote amazon products and all?

I know this may be a current topic but I want to know your opinion.

      Exactly, everything is a niche. So they will always be there. Some niches are evergreen like making money and romance, while others fade over time such as the Xbox 360 niche (because every few years there is a new console system). But everything online is niches. I can't think of something that isn't a niche. Even weight loss is a niche.

    It's understanding supply and demand and a niche site is narrowed down and targeted. Yes they still work very well and are easier to get traffic to than ever today.

    A niche site you can set up, optimize it a little and then have it run itself when done right. Of course you might have to create 5 or 10 to get 1 or 2 but if you do your research before hand you can greatly increase your chances of succeeding on the first try.

    Yes, this model still works . . . and actually, it works better than ever. Why?

    Because it is a model that most spammers don't care to use. They don't want to deeply focus on one thing and become an authority. They don't want to do the work required to build important, valuable web sites. They don't want to build a business based on repeat customer sales. They don't like providing value or helpful assistance to individual customers.

    The problem with this model? It takes time and work. And there are no guarantees of success. But anyone can be profitable with this method if they sacrifice their dreams of instant wealth and set about building a growing asset.

    You can do it too.

    I would consider as the best way to make money online niche sites , but you should know that the scenario is completely different back 2-3 years or today.

    a site gets an exact match domain was created , create a little backwards to find a keyword spamming and can take 1 in Google . With such tactics will not reach the place is not the case today . You can reach the first page, but will not be long before penalized and expelled from search results.

    hard algorithmic changes , are sure to be aware of Google SERPs anywhere with lousy content .

    I think some refer to Niche Sites as very "thin sites" with a few pages of Content and not a lot more. If this is what you are talking about then.. NO !! They do not have much luck as Google really does not place a lot of weight with them

    Niche site sites are very much helpful even today for promoting and affiliate marketing. Content must be unique or may be spinned but must be updated regularly. Try to promote in such manner that it doesn't seem to be very much excessive.

    Can you find me a site that sells something that is NOT a niche site?

    Granted, some target higher-level niches (ex weight loss) versus others that target very specific niches (lose belly fat) -- perhaps your question was around how "niche" you should go?

    Even a site like Amazon (that targets hundreds of thousands of niches) segments their categories and shopping pages into niches...

    I can guarantee you: niche sites work. It's just that you can't just put garbage out there and hope for the best. But if you create a niche site, then put on that site a useful content that real people can use, and then apply one or more ways to get traffic - That's it - you're on your way to be making money with niche sites!

    I wonder if you mean MICRO niche sites? Where it only has a few pages and is specifically designed to send people to one offer. If so I would say no if you are looking for a sustainable long term business. If you mean building a quality site with regular content which actually brings value to a reader, and you work at it for 6 months to a year to build authority and status then absolutely. My biggest advise is to make a 12 month plan not a 1 month plan. If you had done that 12 months ago, where would you be?

      Thank you all for your precious advice. It's good to know there is still an opportunity out there. Building a niche site is a thing I always craved, but I'm having trouble committing to a niche.

      However, I put my question wrong.

      What I actually wanted to ask was more about if the classic METHODS for building niche websites still work today (content, backlinks, social, etc).

      Based on your answers, I assume that the basics still works. They are just harder to achieve, and you need to put a lof of time and heart into it.

      Am I right?

        Yes, you are right. The old ways still work and there are some new ways too.
        You can monetise your site in several ways. Through affiliate products from say, clickbank, plus Amazon affiliate links for products in your niche. You can also add Google ads to your site.
        Make the site a blog and ad 1 - 2 articles a week to keep your site fresh. Make sure you have a signup box on the site with a free giveaway so you are building a list. Start a facebook business page with the same name as your site and post your blog posts on facebook as well and also mail your list everytime you add a new blog post. Join some niche related facebook groups and make 'friends' with people who like your niche. Ask them if they want to be added to your mailing list for free to get info about your blog. See, I haven't spent any money yet.. not paying for traffic or backlinks.

    As long as there's a market for your product, niche sites will always work. There are some methods that just don't die.

    If you manage to get the right traffic to your site, you will make money. Period.

    Hey sanba, niche websites still work and always will.

    While this often requires specialized knowledge, I've always found it easier to focus on a specific niche within a larger market, especially when you're new to the market in general.

    He's absolutely right in pointing out that some people (wrongly) think of thin websites when they hear the term "niche site".

    A niche website can also be an authority website (and it should be, if you want to make more money from it).

    That just means the site satisfies the role of being the "go to" place to find information on that specific niche.

    Many people don't realize that, and they assume a niche website doesn't need in-depth information or much information at all.

    Also, a niche is simply a smaller subsection of a market... that doesn't mean the niche itself is necessarily small.

    So yes, niche websites work well... but thin sites don't.

    I'm sure the difference is obvious now, if you haven't already figured it out.

    Yes, niche sites still works. The misconception is that Google frowns upon niche sites due to MFA, or Made for Adsense sites. As so long as your provide good unique content, update your website frequently, and are able to keep your visitors on your site, there shouldn't be any problems.

    If your niche, however, is too narrow, then you might have some difficulty creating new content for it.

    I appreciate you perhaps only used this as an example and going off an a tangent a bit, but if you ever set up a site selling anything, I suggest you research into dropshippers long before you consider Amazon so you can yield £20 a sale instead of 20p.

      I agree to this. But dropshipping needs extra work and time. You also have to be prepared to face clients who get mad when they need a refund or to exchange their items. If you find good suppliers, there's lower risk of being in that situation.

      I also want to dropship, but It requires more time than just setting up a simple niche blog.

    Sites do not "work", only people are supposed to.

    The emphasis of the OP reveals an expectation that a website will do something.
    The truth is that a site can only do something for visitors (traffic).

    The OP should look at the following, asking:
    Can I find targeted traffic and affordably drive that traffic to a site that will engage them toward a solution for their wants?

    The site must convert or cause further wanting to merit a click through on adsense or other click-thru monetization.

    Websites are a tool.
    Webmasters MUST work.

    Visitors will do what they always do - buy what they want.
    The more visitors you get to come to your site, the more sales / clicks you can achieve.

    As a couple of members have already mentioned, try to focus on a growth market and you should find some success going this route. Just another little tip I can also pass on here and which has worked well for me. Try searching for soon to be released items/products in a hot niche on Amazon. Then make a Youtube video or blog post with some content and link it to that product. As I said, this has worked very well for me in the past.

    Yes, it works and it will work for ever as there are new niche markets arising every now and then due to new products/ trends/ problems faced by people.

    Choose the right niche and concentrate on adding quality content that the visitor will read and share. I have seen hundreds of people succeed with niche sites in a short period of time. But it entirely depends on the first keyword you choose to target.

    Yes it does work, but you have to ask yourself "Are you passionate about it". There is nothing more liberating than doing what you love. Will you be writing quality content for a long enough time for you subscribers to trust you?

    With so many people selling products and providing information, you really do need a niche in order to be noticed. I would try making a digital product to sell directly on your site rather than just trying to obtain you income from affiliate links alone.

    Yes, niche sites work great (and I believe always will). Choose something you are interested in, update often, start a list, and eventually create your own info product to sell to your subscribers. You can find your audience through social media. Niche sites (or blogs) are the way to go, in my opinion.

    They definitely work. A niche site is really just a website, blog, or store focused around a focused topic.

    All you need to make money online is something to sell and someone to sell it to (i.e. offer and traffic). One big problem people make with niche sites is that they try to sell things that people don't want. Don't just guess when selecting a product. Find a proven winner.

    If you want to sell products as an Amazon affiliate, look in the Amazon bestsellers section to find products that are flying off the shelves. If you're looking at Clickbank, check out the gravity of different products to find out how many affiliates are making money with them.

      I think that is a solid idea. As long as you have a ton of content about it and can establish yourself as the go-to site for reviews.

    You just have to do everything the right way. AND take massive CONSISTENT action with what you need to do. Otherwise it is pointless to even pursue this.

    Niche sites work if there is a niche market that you can dominate. A site about lava lamps probably won't have enough traffic, while a site about photography will have a good amount of traffic. You have to do research heading in to picking which niche you want to make a site for, but if you do good research then you can be successful.

    Sure they still work and while Affilorama is great but I disagree with their content distribution strategy which is to essentially target these low competition keywords and build these "sniper" niche sites when there are many other more scalable and viral avenues.

    Absolutely! Most of our top affiliates use niche sites to focus on one topic and promote 1 product. The great thing about this model is that it is very scale-able (you can easily build multiple websites around niches/products) and especially if you target microniches, they are relatively easy to rank.

    Yes they still work because the internet has become the new shopping ground of many lazy people today in this world. The stores get less packed because everyone realizes that you can get ANYTHING from the internet. The great thing with niche sites is that if you do your research right and narrow down the best of the best in a niche of your choice then you can really gain big bucks just by the amount of traffic you are attracting which will bring in stay home job. It is why so many today are trying so hard to make their online business a success, because so many are doing it and succeeding way beyond expectation. Keep up the good work, you are on the right track and a good question.     There is some really cools products out now, that can help your niche get found on social media, with out seo, also if you add content, great design and seo, you will do even better of course. You will make money, but you must have experience in this business to make real money,

    Many people well tell you how to set up a niche blog, but most of them don't know the right way, and you soon find that it is not working and quit, so it must be done the right way, that's why I say you must have experience in this game.or it will never work right.

    I run many test sites, due to me being a software tester for IM marketing, so even my test sites work.

      I would always build a website that Website Investors would be interested in purchasing. A website that generates monthly revenue really stands out.

      Just do a little research on what buyers are looking for in a relatively new niche site or study auctions that have recently ended successfully.

        Just do a little research on what buyers are looking for in a relatively new niche site or study auctions that have recently ended successfully.

        For the most part I agree. Of course there may be exceptions. Making Websites that are conducive to Adsense and such may not be deemed "investable" by someone because of the heavily reliance on Organic
        Traffic ( which can be up and down and unpredictable)

    I'd say so, but I think saying a site about lava lamps is far too narrow. Niche is more about a class of things, rather than a specific item in particular. But I guess that can work too, but going for a class instead of instances would be better.

    What I actually wanted to ask was more about if the classic METHODS for building niche websites still work today (content, backlinks, social, etc).
    If you are chasing Google traffic, good luck.

    If you want to control your traffic, learn how to advertise.

    Websites that target a particular niche with good content (not just affiliate links) I think are still doing well. Write and incorporate your links into the content (recommended resources or reviews).

    Your choice of niches will work if there's a demand...depending
    on how many are interested...

    It's pretty easy to figure out if there's any interest...

    Yet, going with what you really love + knowing there's a demand
    for this...well, that's pretty much a win-win...

    Throwing all your heart and soul into a niche where people
    are seriously interested also...and/or in a desperate niche...will
    surely pay off down the line if it's done right...

    Niche sites worked well now. Also, they worked well years ago. Problem is that you have work a lot harder on social media to develop a presence. Still, it is a lot better to be a big frog is a small pond than a tiny frog in an enormous ocean. Yeah, you could get gobbled up. Competing against giants is never a good idea, and if you do not believe me. Do asked mom and pop shop owners. What happens when wall mart moves in.
