Above the fold. Free offer or Optin form?

Hi guys,

I am building a website and are looking to get any opinions on what you believe is better for building your list/traffic, and also positioning. Having your free offer to one side above the fold such a an ebook and then mission and profile picture on other side, or having the ebook in a feature box, and instead having an optin form up the top?

Thanks

If building a list is your top priority then the higher you place your form, the higher your opt in will be. Feature boxes work great because they stand out and is the first thing people will see.

It's funny - I just opted into a feature box yesterday. I find pop ups annoying but that's merely my opinion.

The only way you'll know for sure though is to test. Sometimes I just place hyperlinks above the fold with catchy wording that will redirect someone to a static capture page.

There are many options that work around the same theme.

      Hi Randy,

Would you place your free offer such as ebook in the feature box in a side column, instead of in the main featured part of above the fold with the mission and visuals etc.?

You put your optin form in as many places as possible without being annoying. I put mine on a top feature area, the side bar, the end of a blog post and sometimes in the middle of a blog post where I lock a valuable relevant content that the reader must unlock by subscribing to my newsletter.

Test different variants, but personally I usually find feature boxes work great (exit pop-ups tend to have a more of an annoying feel)

Split testing. Nobody can tell you for sure. Your traffic will though! Good at keeping things above the fold. You can have a two step process on the right side. Maybe a photo of your book with a button below that then redirects your visitor to an optin form.

    Again its testing with things.

Keep a spreadsheet and put on some numbers. Make some small changes to your landing page and run some more traffic and write down some more numbers. By looking at your numbers you see what is going on better with your marketing.

      Thankyou for the advice guys

So an ebook free offer could work in the main part or side column it seems. I guess it depends to on how new someeone site is as to where they place things, compared to someone who's already established and may have a very different strategy.

        Hi Yoram,

Most of the top marketers I follow begin right in the About Me page.

They may have a link there for the "Start Here Page"

On the Start Here Page you can give your visitor a taste of your writing style and some cool tips as well and also a recommendation/link to your newest project.

Some themes come with a Start Here button call to action right on the Home page.

Also you can test after every blog post an invite/incentive to join your list and do not forget Hello Bars and some slider pop ups are options.

Congrats on your efforts so far wish you best of luck.

          Hi Art,

Great advice. I was thinking of including different sections on my home page as i want have to much startup material apart from pillar posts and my own 2-3 pieces, also including a section about me linking to the main about page, and then possibly my ebook though it would then be a bit to far down. It seems like a popular theme people use to now, such as someone like pat flynn

          Thanks
