Total Newbie Here - Seasoned Corporate Marketer Turning to Internet Marketing

I'm a Director of Marketing at a global events company. I'm currently making over $100k/year but my goal is to replace this income with an online business of my own.

To get my feet wet, I am starting a blog to interview the top internet marketing gurus. The blog is called "Tie Cutters" and will be a community of people just like me who want to cut ties with corporate america and build the life of their dreams.

Who would you say are the internet marketing big boys right now?

Dan & Brad from Job Killing come to mind. The Foundation is another. Who are some of the others I should check out?

Thanks!

Hello Alex, and welcome to the forum.

Okay, current Big Dogs. There's quite a list. The majority of BD IM'ers are not public about their businesses at all. There are a couple of forums you can join to reach them and I believe membership is around $97/yr. The forums are not the same, one being conservative, long term wealth oriented, the other being more slash and grab. I'm trying to remember who recommended them and where they are ... Dang. No luck, not even by searching the 'net. I bookmarked one of them and will get back to you on that later. Send me a PM reminder.

    Public BD IM'ers, short list

    Neil Patel
    Anik Singal
    Kevin Ho
    Omar Martin
    Seth Godin
    Matthew Woodward
    Pat Flynn
    Jamie Lewis
    Brian Dean
    Dean Holland
    John Thornhill
    Dave Nicholson
    David Risley

    'Netpreneurs
    E. Brian Rose, JVZoo
    Jack Ma, Alibaba
    Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook
    Jeff Bezos, Amazon

Lemme find you a list .... Here you go

Thanks Annie! This is an excellent list to help me get started I wonder how tough it would be to get a hold of Bezos or Zuckerberg! Ha! Something to aspire to.

Sent you a PM reminder about the elite forums.

      Thanks!

I'm hoping to interview folks that have their own income-generating system and/or webinar series or coaching services. That way they would hopefully get more clients or customers out of it.

I'd ideally get an affiliate commission for each signup, but my website will focus on making sure that my audience has carefully considered the time and money investment before rushing into anything.

This type of thing has been brought up a few times here over the years. There's a couple of things you will need to address.

First, you'll need an audience before you'll ever get someone to take the time to do an interview, and it will likely have to be a pretty big audience to get anyone successful. You're in a chicken and the egg situation. You need content (interviews) to attract an audience and you need an audience to attract any big names to be interested in doing an interview.

Also, why would someone give you their time and expertise, then pay you a commission? Why don't these folks just create the "interview" (content) themselves and keep all the money?

I'm not trying to be harsh, only pointing out the reality of the situation.

Not harsh at all.. it looks as though some preliminary planning and thinking are necessary before I invest too much time/money. Clearly I haven't thought this through too clearly. I need a mentor... Not sure where to even begin.

At this point, all I have is a logo and a rough idea of where I want to take this thing
          .

HA. I quit my $105k/yr marketing job last week, so I guess necessity will be the mother of invention. I will figure this out... somehow.

You ask why would people would give him their time and expertise, then pay him a commission.

This sounds like a reasonable question. It may surprise you that this is done all the time.

Not only do some marketers give you interviews, some even create private webinars for your traffic.

The only thing that will stand in way, is convincing these top marketers that he will eventually bring them a lot of sales.

If he can convince them of that, a lot of them will gladly grant him the interview and pay him the commissions.

I know of 1 internet marketer (I can't remember his name right now) that has an entire site dedicated to video interviews from other marketers.

I understand, that the interviews that he is getting is not from the top marketers online, but I think if the OP can show them the income potential of his plan, he will be able to get some interviews.

Since he is the currently the director of an offline company, I am sure he will have a better chance of convincing the big boys of doing this than the average Joe.

          Anyway...It can't hurt to try!

Supply and demand. We have a tool here to reach anybody in the world from where ever we have the Internet.

After we understand that then marketing is simply supplying a demand to people using various traffic strategies. Two parts of this and that is getting the quality traffic and then converting that traffic.

Today what matter what market you want to enter for a business the thing to do is right away start building a list of prospects that you can stay in contact with and build that trust. Its your Rolodex!

Top Marketers won't be easy to interview. Good luck. I would come up with another idea maybe.

Brad Campbell was a guy who became known and got his 'breakthrough' marketing the Empower Network and then on to creating that 'local lead gen biz' with his partner Dan.

Unless you know Brad personally, even he won't be easy to get an interview with.

Hey Alex, a good idea could be to start off small.

    1. Interview CEOs of large agencies and showcase them on why they rock in internet marketing

    2. Then show these interviews to the big dogs

You can't expect to get an interview from the larger names without building some credibility first. I'm a writer for Inc., Entrepreneur Magazine, SmallBizTrends, and have contributed a lot to other blogs before really being able to write for these blogs.

    Hope this helps!

    Alex,

    Just an observation here . . .

Think about your own situation and what your most pressing needs are right now in order to be able to replace your income and become your own boss.

Is that the kind of information you're going to get from these "big dogs?"

    I'm guessing not.

They will tell their own story and maybe some of the motivating lessons they learned which is good to a point. But most people considering cutting ties with their employer really need to hear about the nuts and bolts, the details if you will, about just how they are going to get money coming in (and probably fairly quickly.) It sounds, from your original post, like that is what you are looking for - a way to begin bringing in money to pay the bills.

So while I think what you're planning to do is fine (some people do need motivation), at least as a start, if I were someone planning to cutting ties I would need little motivation to tell the boss goodbye . . . I would really want to know how all the details about how to start this new journey and get making money ASAP.

Just my thoughts . . . and the very best to you in your new career.

As I understand, by "Internet marketing gurus" -- You (and the others in this thread) are probably referring mostly to those who cater to the MMO (make money online) market, the affiliate marketing crowd and to coaches / consultants / mentors, info product developers and tech product creators who are also catering to the MMO and affiliate marketing crowd; and

Note: That also means I don't consider the guys behind Facebook, Google, Amazon and eBay as part of this group ...

    Is my assumption correct?

With this, I'm just curious -- Are you targeting US corporate executives, managerial staff and department heads of US corporations, or US residents in general who are currently working at US corporations?; and

Where did you get data that shows any of these groups would most likely be interested in learning what "Internet marketing gurus" or business people mostly catering to the MMO and affiliate marketing crowd have to say?

Well, just from what I know based on what I've experienced -- Maybe there'd be some interest from the third group (American residents in general who are currently working at US corporations) and perhaps a bit from the second group (managerial staff and department heads of US corporations) ...

    ... BUT ...

I'm not sure about the first group. Many of my good friends and colleagues in this group are more interested in learning about the stories of people who started (and are now doing quite good) start-up brick and mortar businesses, ICT companies and social enterprising ventures. Also:

Many of them, mostly those in fairly large corporations with global target markets, are very interested in partnering up with these people for mutually beneficial arrangements, especially as part of their organization's social responsibility programs; and

None of the people I know in this group have any interest in learning what "Internet marketing gurus" have to say ...
