How to make the most of your blog when your time is limited

We would all love more hours in our day. When juggling work, family, friends and everything in between, your blog can fall down to the bottom of the list pretty quickly. When this happens, you need to call upon some tried and true tested formulas to get your pride and joy back up the priority list and working for you again.

By facing some harsh realisations and making some simple changes to the way you blog, you will never be strapped for blogging time again.

Keep your focus on the big picture
If you are finding that your blog is going astray and you are losing focus on what you want to say and how you want to say it, sit back and take stock of where you are at and where you are headed. Having a clear plan of what you want your blog to achieve when you start out really helps you to stay on track.
Your plan can change as your blog matures and finds its feet. Just keep in mind the bigger picture and what you want to achieve. If you are doing things that don't contribute to the bigger picture, stop them and move on.

Stop trying to do everything, all the time
So you're not feeling the blogging love today? Stuck for ideas or motivation? Or just not feeling the love. Leave it be. Wait until you find your inspiration and start again. If you miss a day or a week of content, don't stress. Get back on top when you have found your blogging mojo.

Make a plan and stick to it
The night before, make a task list for your following day. You'll wake knowing exactly what you have on that day and can get straight to it. Nothing beats preparation and it will lead to less wasted time on thinking about your day - and more time getting it done!

Stop procrastinating!
Let's face it - we all put off today what we can do tomorrow. From sleeping in, to going out for coffee, to everything in between - you name it, we'll do it. And the worst offender is social media. We love it but geez does it sap our time. Statistica states that the average daily usage of social media worldwide in 2015 was 106.2 minutes per day - an increase of 3 minutes from the year before. That's over an hour and a half every day! Considering we sleep for 8 hours a night, that's 11% of our waking day spent on social media. Crazy when you put it like that isn't it. So log off, and concentrate on your job at hand. Get social once you're done.

When you are an organised blogger, time is on your side.

    This.

I suggest you do this by creating a timetable on an Excel spreadsheet or a similar software (OpenOffice has a feature like this).

By having an actual timetable you'll no longer have to "find" time - you just sit down at your computer and get to work as planned, every day.

Consistency beats haphazard posting. If you can only post twice a month, do that...but do it consistently.

Book the time to write the post, and do it.

    Quality over quantity.

I read a book on Kindle last night about content marketing/viral content. A well planned, thought out, well written and distributed post can drive more traffic than 1,000 half-arsed posts.

    Here's a tip that should help as well . . .

Make strategic use of the platform's "scheduled" posting feature. WordPress and other platforms allow you to schedule posts to be published at specific times in the future.

If I know I'm going to be away from the computer, or on vacation, or I have a very busy schedule for the next few days, I will write a blog post in advance before it is needed, then schedule it to be posted at a time that will help me to keep to my blog posting routine on schedule.

At any given time I may have 5-10 original posts ready to go but not published. Then if I find myself in a time crunch, or on vacation, etc, I can just schedule one of my unpublished posts and I know I will be able to keep up the consistency of my posting.
