Hello so quick question guys. I recently bought a domain name off 1and1 . I am going to use it with shopify.

Today i have been getting phone calls non stop that i have to pay a monthly fee of $2.50 or $30 up front for a year for activation.

I paid the cost of .99 cents for the first year and $15 for the second through PayPal.

They keep calling me that i have to pay activation fee.

Is this a scam?

Not sure if it's a scam or not but 1and1 is a complete scam itself. I would leave 1and1 ASAP.

They are known for their scams. Just google 1and1 scams and you'll find a lot of them. Simply put, they're the worst hosting company I've ever had to deal with.

Sounds fishy to me. I have registered over 1,000 domain names and have never heard of an "activation" fee. I use Godaddy. You can get a domain for 1 year for $.99 with no activation charges at all. Don't pay them.

Yes they said they were electronic support from 1and1. But they went on to mention godaddy and what not. They sounded like they were from the middle east couldnt really understand.

They new my name and everything. I asked if i could do it online. They said yes and hung up. Since theyve been calling non stop its really annoying.

I believe its a scam. They arent going to get a single cent from me.

I avoid 1and1 like the plague.

In the past they have been accused of saving registrations for later submission with a group of bulk registrations among other things. Yeah, you think you have secured the domain, but maybe you are too late with the possible internal registration delay. Yes, it's happened to me when I tried to take advantage of a cheap registration at 1and1 several years ago.

The only registrar that I suspect that may have had something to do with sniping new domains names from me is 1and1.

My customer service experience with them was beyond horrible, literally atrocious.

So what should I do. I have a contract for 2 years with the promotion.

I feel uneasy and worried its my first domain purchase and now I feel like I cant think passed it.

Thats all i think about now, how i might be scammed and lose money in the future. I couldnt sleep well at night. My ignorance is killing me right now.

Any kind words will be appreciated.

      Thank you.

Sounds fishy to me -- but don't take my word for it. In fact, don't take anyone's word for it around here -- all we can do is guess and conjecture.

Why don't you call 1and1 and see what they have to say? It's easy to call someone and pretend to be someone else -- it's a lot harder to pretend to be someone else when they've called you.

If it was just the domian you shouldn't have to pay more.

Unless you agreed to terms that you use their hosting with the domain. Dont know if this is their terms, but you should look it up. Maybe this is why people see them as a scam.

Next time you just by a domain and pick the hosting you want. Get WordPress and be on your way. 1and1 just wants your money before you realize that.

    Just an idea.
If your domain doesn't have any identity protection activated, people can check your personal information on whois, they can probably also see that your domain is registered at 1and1.

That said, anyone could call you, saying they're from 1and1 support center and trick you into paying them money for the domain.

Better contact 1and1 itself on their website and ask about any additional fees.

You should always buy domain names and hosting accounts from reputable companies like GoDaddy or Namecheap.

It seems what they are doing to you is very likely a scam, because no hosting company will call you directly to ask for money... They will only Email you.

Don't pay them anything, there's no such thing as an ''activation fee''.

Generally speaking, if something seems fishy....it probably is.

You have to ask yourself, are they behaving like a company you'd like to work with if something were to go wrong?

DUDE, follow what gooroo and kilgore said - CALL 1AND1 TECH SUPPORT @ 1 (866) 991-2631.

Dagnabit, what on earth makes people run around looking for answers everywhere except the one place that is screamingly obvious?

How does Google work? Ask Google
How does GoDaddy work? Ask GoDaddy
How does 1and1 work? Ask 1and1

And heaven forfend that anyone should read a contract. Good God, you might find out what you actually signed up for and the company's Terms and Conditions, i.e., their rules and regs. Real biz peeps usually do this before signing any legally binding document. Though for some unknown reason, they seem to forget that even an email can be legally binding.

Sorry, I'm on a bit of a fed up rant today.

    Yeah, it is, Greg.

Like the one that is going around about your computer sending messages to support, ergo your computer needs to be repaired. They come out of a boiler room in India or Pakistan. Somewhere over there.

Funny thing about that - there is another thread this morning from a member who wants to scrape new domain info so he can contact the domain owners . It is so, so easy to get contact information for a domain.

The last time I rec'd one of those calls, I asked the caller how many times they succeed in getting takers. Click! Oh dear. I guess he didn't like the question.

Just to update I have turned off their autorenewal feature and requested a cancellation once my contract is done in 2 years.

I hope that gives them enough time to process it.

Also, I have saved the process in pdf screenshots incase they try to say i didnt comply with the steps.
