I'm sure it's great marketing... most people probably sign up, it helps build the vendor's list, etc. But all I want is the banners, etc. I don't want to be on another mailing list. So I pass it up and move on to another vendor that will let me freely access the affiliate stuff. What do you think? Am I missing the point? Brian |

Personally, I don't have a problem with it. I can always unsubscribe later. Here is what I WON'T do. I won't let this process prevent me from selling what I am sure is going to make me an extra 10K because I know the product, understand the market and know how to promote to it. To me, that's cutting off your nose to spite your face. But that's just my opinion. |

Another thing to consider is that the vendor may also know the most effective strategies to promote his product. Affiliate tools and tips are meant to help you. Giving your email gives them a way of providing you with future assistance for promoting the product. Personally, I will sign up for any page that uses an autoresponder with a valid unsubscribe process because I know I can give a secondary email and opt out whenever I want. |

I can't see the problem with this, I must say. It's not as if anyone's being dishonest with you or anything? I wouldn't hesitate, myself, if I wanted to be an affiliate for the product. (I wouldn't do this myself, as a vendor, I admit - but that's a different matter). |

Hey Brian, As a product owner, I don't really want anyone promoting my stuff if they are unwilling to at least sign up and tell me their name. Some product owners actually care about the actions of the affiliates and want to be able to maintain clear communication with them. It's smart business is what it is. |

The vendor should have a way to contact you. Imagine having a product and some affiliate out there is selling a butt load of it, but you have no idea how to contact them. You may wish to cut them a special deal on your next product, perhaps give them a bonus for selling so much, etc. The same with a bad affiliate that spams. It would sure be nice to know who they are. What about JV's? Perhaps you have something to sell that this vendor could promote if he/she in the future. Having a relationship with the vendor is not a bad thing at all. Test results... some vendors will send you recent split test results, etc. via list. You don't want to miss out on that valuable data. |

Yup, same as everyone else. Doesn't bother me in the least, and in fact it indicates that the vendor is more likely to take their business seriously. But the point that I wanted to bring up was what Steven basically said ... If I know I can make sales off of a product that will help my subscribers, why wouldn't I? Solomon Huey |

Doesn't Travis Sago give people articles and things for free for his Magic of making up to help people promote it better and give affiliates prizes for the number of sales etc..? If that is what type of list you are on...not a bad idea.

Just get a junk email address and sign up for affiliate programs with it. Go to it if you need to or just go to it and delete all your inbox once a month.

It seems to me that ClickBank (CB) vendors are constantly taking a hit for one thing or another they are either doing or not doing. Honestly, if vendors tried to keep all their affiliates (and CB doesn't even let them know who they are) happy all of the time, they would be hanging upside down by their thumbnails with their ar*e blowing in the breeze and even that would not be good enough. Now before you throw rotten tomatoes, I agree that vendors have their products in the marketplace to benefit from the built-in affiliate force. But - as has been discussed often - most vendors are not out to take advantage of their affiliates, 'steal' their commissions, etc. As others have said above, vendors want the affiliate info in order to offer help and support to affiliates, award strong performers and protect the credibility of their product. Without the vendors, there would be no products for the affiliates to promote and make money with. And without CB, affiliates wouldn't have a one-stop shop to find products to promote. Nor would vendors have a plug 'n play affiliate system. In the end, the vendor owns their product and are free to protect, grow and conduct their business as they like. (within the CB TOS and previously mentioned caveat of not cheating the affiliate, etc.) No doubt some do it better than others. In the end, the vendor owns their product and are free to protect, grow and conduct their business as they like. |

Actually signing up as an affiliate can be a big help. Several of the launches I've helped promote recently did follow-up emails to the affiliates which included additional resources like extra autoresponder emails that could be used. Not one of the product owners has pitched anything else to me. It's been strictly about the product launch. And if I ever decided I didn't want to get their emails, for whatever reason, I can just click the unsubscribe link and it's done. |

Lots of good points here everybody... thanks for your input ![]() As a vendor myself, I haven't required my affiliates to sign up but now you have me re-thinking it. Brian |

Large companies online send info to their affiliates on a regular basis and I see nothing wrong with a product owner doing the same. The more you know about a company or product the better equipped you are to see it to others. I do think you are wrong not to sign up. If you have NO interest in what the seller is doing or what he has to say - how well can you sell his product? kay |

I always sign up with an email address I specifically created for signing up to affiliate programs. That way I know all the emails in that folder relates to affiliate offers I promote and I can read them when I want to.

It's better to sign-up so that you can get banners, ppc ads, articles etc. affiliate tools. Otherwise you need to invest your time on that. |

Brian, I certainly appreciate your opinion. I know I'll turn some away at the same time...I try to offer a LOT of help to my affiliates and have a ton of fun at the same time. Plus...I know and TALK to many of my affilates...I spent two hours on Skype just last Friday with one affiliate that shows promise. I only wish I could talk to ALL of them. You know...at the risk of sounding like I am cryin' to momma... I have sold, as an affiliate, over $500,000 for one vendor and NEVER got even a thank you... and I've sold tons of product (In the 7 figures) as an affiliate for dozens of other vendors without even one 'atta boy'. Makes me feel like just another 'number' or something. I VOWED NEVER to let that happen to my affiliates when I became a 'vendor'. And by acting more as a coach...than a vendor...I believe EVERYONE profits and wins. It's hard to be a good coach if I don't know who's playin' on my team:-) Peace, Travis |

Travis, Thanks for your comments, and I know how you feel in a small way... Other than occasional gifts from Google, there is only one vendor who has ever thanked me for my participation... really nice gift baskets every Christmas! Obviously if I want to treat my super-affiliates with the same kind of courtesy, I'll need to know how to contact them... so we're back to the affiliate sign-up. Okay, I'm sold. Brian Quote:

@ The OP When you are promoting hundreds of products... on nearly a thousand websites... you can't be monitoring them all day long... You will be happy that a vendor who is turning you $2,000 + profit a week, e-mails you to notify you of a product removal or change. Imagine a $2k income stream drying up out of nowhere because the vendor couldn't contact you for this notification? I will happily register with ANY vendor who takes the time and effort to put a system in place to help affiliates. Peace Jay |

Signing up to the vendor is vital, any promotion, any changes at all are important to any serious affiliate. To actually walk away from promoting a high converting product because they request your e-mail address is very strange. A serious affiliate who generates revenue will always want to be on the vendors list, and serious vendors know this. |

i always have a squeeze page in front of my affiliate section. most, including myself, dont do this to get your name in thier list to advertise other products. we do this so that we can tell you about future offers and products we are planning to launch in the future. steven is right, you can always unsubscribe if you begin getting promotional emails from that vendor. by passing up a product just because they have a squeeze page, you might be passing up a ton of cash you just missed out on.
