Not sure what this is called exactly

I've seen this plenty when I am on different sales pages....if you want to close the window of the sales pages, then there is a pop up window that offers you a freebie obviously to get on that marketer's list...

Is this a plugin?

Yes, what you're referring to are exit popups / exit intent popups, and there are hundreds of different ones. You can google 'best exit popup' or 'best wordpress popup' , 'best wordpress exit popups'
and you'll find a TON to choose from.

Here are a few awesome ones worth mentioning.

They are useful for catching traffic that would otherwise just leave. But keep in mind that some ad networks don't let you send traffic to webpages that have them, they see it as negative user experience.

It's why I've never used them.

People don't like being "interrupted" or manipulated when they've already made up their minds to leave the page to go elsewhere.

I used to think that way...until I started using them--literally years after the start of my IM work.

        They work.

I use popups for opt-ins, and they work.

I use exit popups to redirect to content, ie. not an offer immediately, but where they will eventually encounter an opt-in or an offer. Eg. "So you don't want this offer, OK. How about this related free content?" That doesn't result in a negative user experience.

What people SAY and how they actually BEHAVE are two very different things.

          I understand.

Personally, I believe there are better performing tactics and strategies that can be used to guide people to exit alternatives which allow the user to decide what he/she wants to do.

My point was, I don't like them and won't subject my subscribers to them. I prefer other methods.

Can you elaborate on these alternatives?

For what it's worth, I find those "Exit Popups" really annoying.

I suppose if it's a related offer that would be something, however my experience is that it's just another email capture page.

I imagine it depends on your niche, how much the product is, your demographic, the urgency of the 'fix' and many other variables

I guess it all comes down to testing. That being said, most of the time exit popups annoy me too but I did buy once from an exit pop up...

Interesting topic, im going to write about this. Thanks guys.

It is exit pops and it helps marketers increase their conversion rates - although it can be annoying for the visitors...

It's called an "exit-popup". Marketers use them based off psychology. People don't know what they want until they see. Doesn't matter what kind of preconceived thought they have in their mind after they see your initial offer. Exit-popups gives you that 1 last chance to offer them something for free that has a high perceived value. This is no different from followup messages, OTO's, overcoming rejection, etc.

ExitPop... You should be using this on your sites if you care about your number. I see about a 10-15% increase in sales and opt-ins by using it. I've used Dave Guidon's version for years, but I'm sure there are a bunch of versions of this technology at the moment.

Yes always good to have another opportunity for a new subscriber and offering something appealing upon exit increases the chances of that happening.
