5 Mistakes to Avoid in Content Marketing

Content is key when it comes to marketing online. You must have a strategy and know what you are doing. Marketing is an essential part of any business. The only way to get your business to the next level is if your marketing strategy is strong. A great marketing strategy can be a game changer for you.

But that doesn't mean that you won't do anything wrong with your strategy. There are many ups and down that you go through before finally using a strategy that works. And if you are new in the content marketing business then you are bound to make many mistakes before finding your niche.

Mistake Number 1: Not Paying Attention To Titles

It's true that content marketing is all about content, but many people don't realize how much the title of your content has an impact on the viewers. A fresh, unique and interesting title has the power to convert viewers into leads. Your title should be catchy and try to incorporate numbers and adjectives into the title. Interrogative sentences are much more attractive than normal sentences.

Mistake Number 2: Making Errors

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in your content marketing is to have grammatical and spelling mistakes in your content. No one likes content that has words written wrongly and it sends a negative message to the viewers. Glaring mistakes can have a negative impact on the audience. It creates a clash between the company and the clients as the audience views it as pure neglect of effort on the company's part.

Mistake Number 3: Talking About Yourself A Lot

Viewers know that the main purpose of your marketing strategy is to sell your product. But you don't always have to talk about yourself or your brand or product. You can talk about your clients, your experience or ask for feedback from the clients but if everything you post is a sales pitch, people will soon get bored. You can make your content educational and informational while being entertaining without having it sound like you're trying too hard to sell your product.

Mistake Number 4: Not Posting Enough On The Right Platform
Another mistake companies make while working on their content marketing strategy is not posting enough. While it's true that posting content 24/7 can have a negative effect on you, it is also advised not to go cold turkey altogether either. If there is no news about your company or your product on the viewers' newsfeed, then the viewer will just simply move on to the competitors' product. It is also crucial to post on the right platform for maximum impact and reach.

Mistake Number 5: Ignoring What Your Customers Have To Say

The best strategy for content marketing is to interact with your customers. Not just through your posts but also try to answer their questions. If you are neglecting your customers, you are not doing content marketing correctly. If you are in constant interaction with your customers, you will know what their needs and wants are and can profit from fulfilling them. But if you don't know what it is that the customers want how can you help them out. Therefore, it is best that you listen to what the audience has to say about your product and try to answer all their questions.

These are the top 5 mistakes you can make while working on your content marketing strategy. It is best to avoid these mistakes if you want a strong strategy that gets you loads of audiences that are willing to turn into leads.

I totally agree. A title is a call to action. It needs to interest the reader enough to take action to read your content. If someone is turned off by a title, the lead and conversion is lost.

Great post and I think you offer a lot of solid advice!

Mistake Number 6: Not Re-Purposing Your Content Into Multiple Forms

If you're not re-purposing your content, you're leaving out different channels of exposure.

    Wrote a blog post recently?

Great, now you can turn that text based content into a video and upload it to YouTube for even more exposure.

Also, you can turn your posts/articles into PowerPoint style presentations and generate traffic from SlideShare.

You can do this with audios (such as through iTunes), infographics, or any other form of content.

    Regards,
    Daniel

These are fantastic suggestions, and can help boost your traffic and your rankings. I would say if you were going to pick any two of these to do it would be to turn the article into a PowerPoint type video where you either read the content or comment on images, etc. This would depend on what kind of content you had posted.

The second would be turning it into a podcast and setting it up on iTunes, SoundCloud, Google Play, etc.

I would also say it's a great idea to turn it into a PDF and make that available to your readers to download and encourage them to share it. You could also use this to build out your newsletter base by including a link inside the PDF to an opt-in form you set up on a page on your blog. The idea would be if they sign up to your site's newsletter they would automatically get the PDF emailed to them every time you post a new article. I suppose you could also include links to the podcast and also the YouTube video. All of these lead people to social media outlets, which means that they could potentially share your content and bring in NEW readers.

I would also recommend setting up a Facebook page exclusively for your site and only posting links to your content on it. Don't do any selling or promoting on the page, just straight links to your blog posts. You can use your blog or your list to do promos.

There are literally hundreds of places you can share your content if you take the time to turn it into as many forms of media as possible. Honestly, if you have KILLER content, it doesn't take long to build up a decent sized audience. People LOVE to hang out on Facebook and share things that interest them with their "friends." All it takes is ONE well placed share on a popular fan page and your content could go viral. If you have have ever had a piece of content go viral on Facebook or a video go viral on YouTube, you will get an AVALANCHE of traffic that could last for 72 hours or more. In that time, you could potentially grab hundreds of fresh leads.

I couldn't agree more especially with numbers 1 and 5. Mistake Number 1: Not Paying Attention To Titles- this could make or break your products. Mistake Number 5: Ignoring What Your Customers Have To Say- good or bad comments are all helpful.

Yea you missed one very crucial point a lot of content writers don't pay attention to what level their readers are they just write according to their level hence sometimes making it difficult to understand for an ordinary reader. Just keep it simple I would suggest to every writer so that everyone can understand what your saying with precision.

you learn from your mistakes - i belive in that. we will keep making mistakes but the importance is to understand why it was a mistake only then can be improve.

Similarly when marketing some content gets alot of engagement while other lacks it - this may neccessarily not be because of the mistakes written above but merely due to the reason your customer did not care for that kind of trend.

In my working experience I have identified what kind of content people may respond to or the one that may evoke no reaction. I also feel for every category of product the individual is marketing this may vary.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10703137].message }}
  • I definitely agree that mistake #3 is pretty common in content marketing. If you just talk about yourself it shows you're living in a bubble and you have no idea what your customers need or what you competitors are doing.

Totally agreeing with these five mistakes. As in my experience content marketing is all about active audience engagement and relationship building. So you need to have content marketing strategy in a place to build audience connections that trigger conversations around your brand.

You need to be creative and unique. If your content is the same as everyone elses your going to have low retention rate. Be unique, be creative, be interesting.

actually you do not need to be creative, but you do need to be unique.

The good old days, you slap up a blog post and go to the top of GOOGLE< with seo.

These days you need to study, do keyword results and research LSI keywords, to do any good.

However what SEO gurus tend to tell you is you need to have a good post, but realististlly you need a good post about 2000+ words these days to even get a thought and a nod from google.

so 2000+ words, unique content, ALT'ed images, with LSI keywords, and even then! LOL.

Its a harder race to win, but you can still do it.

That is why PAID traffic is better these days, you can actually get instant results and learn how to upscale, because you can turn it on and off like a tap.

Actually, actually, actually, you don't need 2000 + words and you don't need good content for SEO. Might need those things for your visitors, but not for SEO.

Pay attention, some times, to what pops up on page 1 in Google, right at the very top. Often, the content has not been changed in years and it's short, often, including the code, the content is under a few hundred words!

Number 3 is true. With the "operative" phrase being " a lot". I think it is almost a necessity to talk at some point about yourself so people will feel more engaged as you promote a sense of 'person-ability'.

But too much as you say is not advisable at all !

Incredible! Me Harold Nartey from Georgia I thoroughly concur. A title is an invitation to take action. It needs to intrigue the peruser enough to make a move to peruse your substance. On the off chance that somebody is killed by a title, the lead and change is lost.

Mistake Number 3: Talking About Yourself A Lot---really a great mistake. I don't think you have to talk about yourself. You could just simply give a few information about yourself like your educational background but not too personal info about you. Focus on the product. Great discussion, by the way.

Here are a couple more mistakes to add to your list.

Both are very prevalent online these days and they are related to one another.

    - Not understanding the topic you're writing about, thus giving false, outdated, or irrelevant information.

    - Not going deep enough into the subject or just giving "whitewashed" or unhelpful very general information. Anyone can find this type of info online and it's evident that the author isn't an authority on the subject.

I agree with Robert that we SHOULD actually talk about ourselves... to a point. Though that does not mean pitching. It means to share some of your personality and personal journey so that, as he says, people feel more engaged.

There's TONS of info out there, and what makes yours different is YOU. Don't be afraid to share your opinion and your experience.

It may not always be easy to find the right balance, but it it's something worth working on! People will be more likely to remember you and connect with you.

    Don't be boring.

Add stories, or humor, or examples. Pull the reader in and get them engaged quickly. Make them feel excited about what you're going to share with them.

When I did magic shows for children I had one minute to get them on my side or else they'd make their own entertainment. I would show my hands empty and then pull a scarf from thin air. It was simple but it left the impression that if they looked away they would miss something.

Make it clear that if they click away they're going to regret not hearing what you have to say.

Then I'd bring up an audience member to be part of the show. You can do this in your articles, too. Let them picture themselves doing what you're explaining.

Then end with a big finish. (Live rabbit from a hat or floating the birthday child in the air). It's not about you, it's about making it an experience that they enjoy or learn from.
