Defining your target market is really one of the basics. First, you have to know the people who might be interested in buying your product/services. Here's a simple example:

Your product is an ice cream. Think of the people who love ice cream... moms, dads, teens, kids-- you name it. You just have to target those persons compatible with what you have got to offer and make sure to provide them the most convenient product/services they've never tried before.

    Get specific.

WHO is the best fit for what you offer?

How much do they earn per year?

What personality traits do they have?

    What experiences have they had?

"Everyone" is NOT a target market. And neither is "Everyone who likes ice cream." People have to have a disposable income above a certain level to feel comfortable about going out to Baskin Robbins. They have a typical # of kids, who are of certain ages. They frequently drive a particular kind of vehicle. They themselves are a specific age. They watch certain TV shows. They go out for ice cream because they have specific values, like "Time Spent Doing Activities Together As A Family Is Important."

All these factors and more go into your avatar.

"MMO" is not specific enough, either.

How much money do they want to make? What's their comfort zone? What's their experience level with making money? "As much as possible" is an idiot's target. Do you want idiots for prospects?

Trying to sell a program that offers a $100K-$200K revenue stream to a prospect who thinks $5000 is "a lot of money" is a waste of time...as is the reverse. Can you see why getting specific is important?

Be specific and match reality. If you don't know enough about your target market to be able to do this, then you need to find out more about them.
