What is this called???

Does anyone know the terminology behind these mental barriers... ex: the 4 minute mile was seen as being impossible for hundreds of years, but since Roger Bannister broke the record in 1954.... John Walker managed to run 135 sub-four-minute miles and lowered the record by 17 seconds. To date, 955 runners have run sub-four-minute miles and now theres been a 17 year old to have done it.

Why is it that it was "Impossible" for so many years but since someone has done it the "mental" block has been removed and it is easy for others to achieve. I know this is called something... is there a word for this?

Glass Ceiling comes to mind. Sort of the same thing but I don't think it's what you are looking for. Maybe this will get the other's juices flowing and someone will come up with it.

I think it's a belief no one has done it so the mind believes it is so until a person acts powerful enough to challenge and old belief.

I guess you could say "What the Mind can believe The mind can achieve" Napoleon Hill

That is my thoughts on this.

These are all great ideas but not what i was looking for.. I have herd of it described before using a certain phrase. Another example of this would be a millionaire/ billionaire that goes totally bankrupt but in just a few years later have it all back i.e. Donald Trump. People like Donald Trump are accustom to making millions/ billions and knows it is easily obtainable so getting it back is easier that one of us trying to create that much money from scratch.

I am retracting breakthrough and going with above

Most definitely the breakthrough of the 4 minute mile created a paradigm shift and what was impossible is now possible.

I am not sure if you didn't answer your own question.
      Barrier
This word often referred to in sports such as running and swimming but also was reference before anyone reached the top of Mt. Everest. ie: Breaking through the mental barrier.

The flip side of "mental barrier" is "hitting the wall" which is more of a physical explanation.

I don't know if there is a term for it, but it is basically acceptance of what is and the belief of what can be. If you can't believe in what can be, you are stuck with what is.

There is an old saying that if you believe you can't you can't and if you believe you can you can. Which ever one you believe you are right. So until Roger ran the mile in under four minutes, it was a barrier. As soon as he did it, the barrior was broken and people believed that it could be done. Only Roger believed it until he proved it was true.

Roger knew he could do it if he trained right. So he had four different runners run against him for a mile and at the end of the first quater mile the second runner took over until the mile was done. Eventually Roger was able to sprint for the whole mile and then it was simple.

Maybe the term you were looking for is confidence.

Nobody will EVER know what TRULY happened. I'm sure it wasn't any magic, etc...

Look at mcguire, etc... That was because of steroids and all. SAME with bodybuilding.

You know, I ACTUALLY saw a program recently that said there was NO magic pill, and they said anabolic steroids weren't either. They said you STILL had to work at it. BULL!!!!!! If that were true, NOBODY would ever take them. They can make you sterile, increase cancer risk, damage kidneys, etc... AND, up until perhaps the 90s, they required a LOT of effort to cycle properly to prevent all sorts of problems. In the 90s, they made new ones that had FEWER side effects. Of course, they are now ILLEGAL in the US, so it is anyones guess as to how safe they are NOW! If the idea of steroids not helping matters greatly were true, science wouldn't say otherwise. Anabolic means "BUILDS UP"! If that were true, natural bodybuilders would be as buff, etc... If that were true, and HERE'S the CLINCHER! The people forced to go off them wouldn't SHRINK! Several HAVE been forced to go off, because of kidney damage etc..., and some equated the effect to letting the air out of a balloon.

Does it STILL require work to look like arnold, etc? OF COURSE! Does it require as much? NO WAY!

And there is a "woman" that recently won a race:

Caster Semenya Gender Dispute in Women 800 Meter Race :: Celebrity gossip juicy celebrity rumors celebrity scandals Hollywood gossip blog from Hollywood Grind

I don't know the gender, but there is obviously something wrong hormone wise.

So who knows? Was it the idea of a new record to beat? The idea of new acclaim? New training methods? New supplements? Steroids? Frankly, I bet it was all of the above!

I have to agree with Don and say that "Paradigm" is the word you are seeking.

However, "excuse" may also be appropriate for most IM'ers that fail.

Final thought - I call it a "limiting belief".

Dr Wayne Dyer has a great book and audio series called "Excuses begone!" that is the cure for this.

      Regards,

      John

Nooo.... I doesn't have to do with steroids. Within 2 years after Roger Bannister Ran the 4 minute mile 37 people matched that 4 minute mile mark. That's a ... "Mental Barrier....?" that was broken.

As strange as it might seem (at least to me)

it looks as if magick is the winner. ???

There are some references to willing things to happen and belief systems.

For my logical mind I will stick with paradigm shift.

A little off topic, but I think I read somewhere that man was running sub 4 minute miles long before Bannister, like in the 1700-1800's, and there where accurate clocks/watches during this time. I think it was the French that ran the sub 4 minute miles.

When founded, the Olypmic Commitee ignored older records and started over.

I'm getting older, and could be wrong about all of this.

On topic: I agree with George that it would be called a "glass ceiling", or "BS".

Who knows, Guiness really wants to be there to declare it a record. BESIDES, time isn't the ONLY thing to consider. I bet you could FALL a mile in under 4 minutes. 8-) Maybe if you acted like you were running....

      Hi,
I don't know that 'glass ceilings' or 'limiting beliefs' are really what created the 4 minute mile 'barrier'.
I think that sports training techniques, both mental and physical, have improved so much over the years that maybe we should be wondering why they've only managed to knock 17 seconds off given the vast amount of effort and money that must have been involved. 17 seconds is only a 7% imorovement!
Could it be that the word we're looking for is just "progress" ?

  • "I searched magick and got books and info on magic and occult?? Im sure that magick may have two meanings. Is there a book or resource you can suggest to find further info on magick?"

I don´t have my knowledge about certain things from books. But if you are looking for a book you could try "Magick in theory and practice", by Alister Crowley. But remember that Alister Crowley was a Satanist.

  • "Defibrillator. Yes that is the what you were looking for."

I wonder what you mean. Simply put: Is our so called intelligence just some evolutionary byproduct or does it mean more. Did it start with Adam&Eve eating the apple and is there more to it? More than just some kind of ability. Some animals can run very fast, others can fly and we can think. Can it bring us to heaven or hell or can it turn us into sourcerers etc.?

""Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will."

Is breaking mental barriers or breaking records magick, according to the above sentence.
I´m sure these people breaking records don´t believe they are practicing magick, but you can do it without knowing. Why do they want to break those records in the first place? For the same reason Adam&Eve ate the apple, to become something godlike? Something that can cause changing to occur in conformity with there will, their will constructed by their thinking brains?

Well I just did some quick research to see if I could be the one to give you the term you're looking for, but I didn't one. I did find that sometimes you have to do "impossible thinking" The one who can do that is the one who will break through the "psychological barrier" hel by everyone else.

    Good question!
