Searchers, what are they looking for ?

when searchers search for a product type like fishfinders, what are they looking for ? reviews ? cheapest fishfinders ? nearest store? product spesifications? I guess they search for all this and much more but what can I give them to increase sales ?
The reason for this question is I see people coming into a site after an product type search, stays for two seconds and boff, gone, while others look for more. I wonder why these bouncers are actually looking for.
Any suggestions?

I can only respond with my own thoughts, but I don't know if they match your bouncers thoughts.

When I search for a "thing" I am looking for an authority site. I don't want a bunch of reviews that are obviously affiliate links. Maybe those not in IM won't know, but I sure do. I can't trust the "recommendations" on most review sites when there is profit motivation.

I am also looking for a professional looking site. If it doesn't look good I assume its junk.

Price is another factor. I want to know the best price so I might be looking at several sites.

Sometimes I want to fix my existing fishfinder and am looking for specs, tips, instructions on how to do that. I don't want to buy one but I find a review or sales site.

Other times I want to sell my fishfinder and I just want to find out what its worth.

It's often tough to tell from a single word where they are in the search/buying cycle. As they refine their search and add more words you can often infer how close they might be to making an actual purchase. Based on this analysis it is possible to create strategies that fit their needs.

You might also be able to infer intent by studying your access paths on your website. Of course this only helps you understand those that stay, but it's a start.

Another way to develop a profile is to segment the basic ideas you have and then create a series of simple PPC campaigns. Run those for a short while and see which ones give you the best results. Marry this data with your site and you will likely see sales improvements.

As you might imagine, this is complex subject but there are simple solutions to start with. Begin there and "fail forward" adapting and improving. This works well because the Internet (and your market) is always evolving, so when you think you've nailed it ... you have to adjust once more :-)
