Need advice: how to market handicrafts online

Hello folks,

I am new here and need some advice from the experienced internet marketers. I have direct connections to some really good artisans who produce handicraft items. These are mainly jewelries, bamboo products, bags, apparels, etc.

Does anyone here have experience in selling these products online?

What are the best ways to market them online?

Please share your views, thoughts and ideas.

You could sell on Ebay, and maybe Etsy.

Another alternative would be to create a website and sell from there. I'd recommend using WordPress as a content management system, as it has lots of advantages and is free. A good way of getting more traffic is to do a blog on your website, so you could feature a different product each day, talk about the artisans, materials, show images and video of the artisans working etc.

Another approach would be to find a suitable seller and work with them. That could be a suitable shop anywhere in the world, an expert Ebay seller who could help you make more sales, or an experienced internet marketer who could sell effectively from a website etc. (you might be able to find one of the latter on the JV forum here).

See how other people are selling similar products and learn from them. Find websites with similar products, and ask them how they are selling, and/or see if you can do a joint venture with them.

    Hope that helps

    Chris

Thanks, Chris. The first thought that came to me was also about creating an online shop and then market it. But I see a lot of competition there and I do not have much idea about the market demand in this sector, although I still feel blogging/content marketing can make sales.

Joint venturing with an established seller looks like a good idea. I will need to dig deep into it.

Competition can be a GOOD thing, as it can indicate that others are making a profit from this niche, which means that you can learn how to do that too. To verify that a bit better, look at how long the websites have been registered . . . if the majority have been up for years, then it is likely that they are making a profit.

To compete you'll have to learn enough about internet-marketing (or work with someone who has that experience).

That's a solid proof for it's validity, Chris. Thanks a lot. Feels like I am heading towards a right track. I will do a research on the thing you are hinting to. I might come up with some more questions. Hope you don't mind.

There is an ecommerce section within this forum that provides detailed advice. Also use the search feature with the words Etsy or handmade. It will provide you with a good number of resources and advice from the pros.

You can create an e-commerce site and start selling your product. It is the best way. If you don't have enough money to run an e-commerce site, you can start with Facebook page. Many peoples are using Facebook page to promote their product. You can also use Facebook paid Ads to promote your product to targeted traffic.

Yes, that's one way to go.

I have seen someone doing business solely through a Facebook Page while starting out. This could be an option for me too. Thanks.

Check out Paaltao Marketplace for Handmade, Natural & Vintage Products.
It is the first ever marketplace where anyone can open a shop in few minutes without filling long forms and going through lengthy shop opening process. The listing of products is free but once the products are uploaded, it is under review to check whether its genuine. It’s very simple to use.
Paaltao is a startup which aims to create a community of handmade sellers and buyers in India to promote and uplift the life of artisans and their quality work. Here you can purchase directly from the creator of the product.

Paaltao seems to be a new one in the market. Can you please pour some light on market demand of handicrafts in India?

I was doing some research and found a few articles showing "best marketplaces to sell handicrafts in India". Surprisingly, most of the Sites don't exist now. They are GONE. What does this indicate?

Amidst all this, I found a site called BrownTape. They are providing a platform where a seller can list and sell his/her products across different channels. Digging deep into it right now.

You must check Shopify as well as plateform, if you are not very familiar with WordPress.

I am familiar with WordPress but I have not worked with setting up an online shop with it. I do know that it can be easily done.

    Sounds like physical product...

#1 trending idea... try out Shopify or Ebay as one of our member mentioned...

Most important: find the customers to buy them.

Very easy said but, depends each and individual ability to thrive.

ebay is a great test market, try selling your pieces on ebay before you build an ecommerce site or fb page. ebay has a captured audience, so if people want your items they will buy them on ebay without much effort on your part. I only sell items that I own and store in my warehouse... I wouldn't be willing to sell your stuff unless it was in my possession.
I'm sure there are other sellers who would do a dropship agreement with you... good luck with your goods. if they are anything like puravida products, you will do well... they are hot right now

Thanks for sharing your experience. Since yesterday I have come across so many platforms and marketplaces. Among them Amazon, eBay and Flipkart are the most recommended ones here in India.

I feel without wasting much time, I should get all the formalities done and try one marketplace like eBay which you mentioned.
