Google Authorship - still relevant?

I recall a time (2014?) when experts were telling us to claim "authorship" for our posts - meaning adding relevant markup to code so that Google can connect the post to our Google+ account and display our mugshot next to the post in the search results.

I think it was supposed to have other benefits, such as getting potentially better rankings for people "connected" to us in Google's eyes (e.g. people who had us in their Circles).

Then I recall it suddenly lost its importance: Google no longer paid attention to authorship.

But is it coming back? Might it come back?

I see there's a product being launched soon that includes adding authorship as a feature.

Any opinions about this?

Thanks

Alex

Authorship got hijacked by too many marketers, so Google devalued it (or dropped it all together). I doubt it's coming back unless Google figures out how to authenticate it better.
