How To Determine If A Niche/Market Is Profitable?

Hi all,

I'm doing a little brainstorming/research and gathering a lot of niche ideas but I need a little help in determining whether the niche is profitable. That is, does the market actually buy?

I know I can go to clickbank and find popular products but I'm digging deeper down in low competition niches.
All help is appreciated

    Hi Jennifer,

This subject comes up a lot. If you search the forum you should find a bunch of ways (I know I've posted tons).

Depending on your niche, it's best just to go to where people are buying stuff and see if they're buying what you're selling.

Ebay is a classic for this - if it's selling on Ebay then you know it sells.

Clickbank stats can be misleading because many people sell a ton of CB product via email and unless you have a responsive list then you won't necessarily get the same results.

So, Ebay Pulse is a good place to check.

Alternatively, do a search on Google and check out the top advertisers and what they're selling (and how).

      This is really good advice.

Rather than starting out finding a profitable niche, find yourself a profitable product to promote.

It will save you a ton of time in your niche research. Ebay Pulse tells you what is selling. Amazon.com actually tells you what is the hottest selling items in each category!

So find what is hot, pick a few products, and do some keyword research on them.

For example, the Nintendo Wii is going to sell well again this holiday season. That keyword, however, probably isn't doable

BUT, because it is such a hot selling, in demand item, if you go to google's keyword tool, you will find lots of Nintendo Wii keywords you can rank for...and many of these are buyer keywords

Product research will save you a lot of time....because ultimately, we are promoting a product as an affiliate...and hopefully one that sells

No kidding. Ebay also has some marketplace research tools that are excellent. Cost a bit more but are really worth it. I've found the analysis I make there really holds up well for Search engine users as well (buyers anyway).

Just head over to barnes & noble or any other large book store and look for magazines and books in that market.

Printing books and magazines is VERY expensive. If you find more than a few books and more than 1 magazine for that niche, you KNOW that people are buying.

    Online:
Head over to Google and see whether more than one person is spending money on PPC ads.

I see people give that advice a lot, and while there's a logic to it - it's a really bad way to start online, because there's a MASSIVE difference between knowing what people buy offline and finding a way to access them online.

You can easily say if people are paying high PPC then there must be a market - but those people are probably making most of their money on the back end, so even if you could get that same traffic at a price you could afford - you could still end up losing money because you don't maximize the sale like they do.

The same with keywords - finding lots of people is different to finding lots of buyers.

    Several methods:

    * Check google for a bunch of keywords related to your niche and see what the ads on the right side are selling.
    * Check the price of ads in your niche with google external keyword tool (inaccurate but gives some idea). If the price is higher than $0.5/click you can be certain that the profit is there for the products that are being advertised.
    * Check the sites in the organic listings; what keywords are they optimized for? If they're optimized for product related keywords you can be sure that they're making a profit with those keywords and products.
    * Search the forum here for more ways.

A quick and dirty method to check is to start a new PPC campaign on google. Keep in mind, the idea is not profitability of the campaign but to see if anyone buys. A typical size that I test is 100 visitors.

This test can be done on an existing product in the niche which has an affiliate program.

Or if there is no product in the niche with an affiliate program, you can put up an optin page to gauge the interest level. A more foolproof but longer method is to put up a sales page with the price and the order button. However, a click on the order button should lead the prospect to a page where you can tell them that the payment set up will be completed in a few days and ask them to optin to be reminded once the payment page is up.

The number of these 'conversions' should give you a fair idea of the demand level/commercial viability of the niche.

Well it would also help if the niche you're targeting has a nagging problem that needs a quick solution. People crying out for immediate relief. E.g. people with insomnia, heart break, acne etc. Or should I say desperate buyers as advertised on the Warrior forum. haha.

People are passionate about their hobbies and collectibles. They also are rabid buyers when they have a problem that needs fixed. So approach your niche hunt from this angle. Trying to solve people's problems.

Go to yahoo answers and look for health problems people are asking about
Kovels.com and see what are their hot collectibles right now
Tias.com and see what are the hot sellers there
Collectorsweekly.com has a list of things people collect
magazinesubscriptions.ws shows the # of magazines in each category. Pick a niche that has a lot of magazines.
