How do you gauge accuracy when using social media for EBook ideas?

I know that you could use social media to crowd source book topics and ideas for Kindle books. The problem is, it's one thing for a topic to trend on social media and it's another for that topic to have an actual market. There have been many occasions where social media sent out fake signals.

My question is, how do you come up with a self-correcting system to gauge accuracy when using social media signals to help you with your Kindle book publishing decisions?

Align the context of your data.
What I mean by this is that Buzzsumo might tell you that a video of a cat falling from a shelf got millions of shares on FB but would you write a book about it? No. Would it sell? Mm, maybe silly cat stories would but you're not likely to make much buck.

The focus needs to be primarily on the audience, industry or 'problem' you are solving with your book. Research into the niche. Definitely use social shares as one indicator - but don't let it be the make or break.
