I'm a Jack of all trades, and master of none. Which direction should I go?

I've worked in the marketing/publishing industry for the past 20 years or so (starting around the age of 16), so I know a fair bit about many aspects of marketing both online and offline. The problem is, I've been mainly in "support" positions (primarily as a programmer and occasional copywriter) and haven't really mastered "marketing" in general for myself. And, now that I'm in a position to begin working towards making my own living online (fortunately it doesn't need to be immediately), I find I'm not sure where to start.

My goal is to be making $4k per month within a year, and yes, I know that will take time, effort, and some hiccups along the way. But the main problem I'm having is deciding which direction would be most promising to start in:

1.) Design and market my own product (I have a 3 or 4 unproven ideas)
2.) Open a drop-shipping business
3.) Affiliate marketing

Common to each of these would be selecting which marketing methods to use, and knowing how to pick a profitable niche - in fact, that is probably the biggest piece of the puzzle to me.

I'm not asking anyone to do my homework for me, and I know better than to think there are any "secrets" out there that will make it easy. I really just need some help choosing a general direction to head in - so any advice along those lines would be very much appreciated.

(I should mention that I am willing to consider purchasing an educational course or two, but only if someone other than their authors recommends them. )

Thanks in advance for any pointers!
