How Would You Market This?

Hey Guys,

I run a small business that operates clue-solving adventure games in specific towns in the UK.

Basically small teams can purchase the downloadable game-pack via my website and they the game is self-guided as they try to solve the clues - it's a bit like Cluedo on foot!

Currently almost all of our sales are via Facebook - it's going ok and we're in profit but it's not breaking any records!

We know our customers tend to be women between the ages of 25-35, they are married or in a relationship, they are average earners who tend to own their own home - and they tend to be active, adventurous types.

Based on the above - what other channels might you consider to market a local adventure game such as ours?

We really appreciate any input.

All the best

This is an interesting business you have.

Honestly, Facebook Ads is going to be your best bet. They are extremely targeted and are perfect for finding new prospects for your business, but you already know this...

However, forgive me if i understood this wrong, but you are limiting your consumer base by only allowing individuals from 'towns in the UK' to buy your downloadable game.

I would suggest broadening your adverts to include the other surrounding countries. This is just an idea. As for different mediums of advertising to complement your already successful Facebook ads, you could try to advertise via classified ads sites.

I would try and get the word out via Email Marketing to begin with and see how it goes, it may be worth the investment because it can lead into other aspects of Internet Marketing too.

Impressive with the detailed demographic data.

Why not try and connect with businesses that sell to the same demographic? Example, aerobic or dance classes, those are mostly active women.

Does your product cost you anything at this stage? If it cost you very little and just time I would suggest groupon or something similar and make the upsell on the day that the people arrive.
Groupon will ask you to give something like an 80% discount but all said they will bring you a whole new demographic and you can do an end of year giveaway for the best facebook post linking back to you. That way you are adding to your facebook audience.

Have to say, it seems like a great idea for a business.

Well done as well for knowing exactly who you are selling to. The vast majority of businesses don't have a clue.

I suggest running paid Facebook ads (your market almost certainly will be on Facebook) and driving them to your website/squeeze page.

When here, you then want to capture their email addresses. The best way to do this would be to offer what's known as an "ethical bribe". This is something you offer them for free, in exchange for them giving you their email address. I can't tell you what to offer here, but it needs to be something your market will desire enough to happily give you their email. Perhaps you could offer a discount voucher? Though it's up to you. Be creative.

I suggest looking at the "Email Marketing" sub-section of the forum.

I've built two businesses up using almost nothing but email. (One was a "brick and mortar" type business in the UK (Norwich).) I'm confident you can do the same with yours.

    Hey All,

Thanks for the input - I really appreciate it.

The issue I have with Facebook and email marketing, which I'd love to do, is that it's costing us around $0.95 per click (clicks to website advert) and from that we have an email sign-up rate (we're offering a small discount voucher if they give us their email) of around 20% from the squeeze page. In total with the sales from that we're making a small loss from this kind of advert just because of the cost per click - I'm finding this really difficult to get any lower even with super targetted campaigns.

We are running FB competitions and helping these along with boosted ads which are working much better (around $0.16 per engagement) but the profits are nothing to write home about - plus they're a lot of work to manage - we email every entry with a small discount code.

Maybe we just don't know enough about Facebook to get this right. I'd love to be able to run offers and clicks to website that create a decent ROI - but our products are generally between £15 and £20 to buy and on average we sell 1 product in every 80-100 clicks.

We're thinking about running a local leaflet campaign to see how that works out. We are also on Groupon soon.

Any more thoughts would be great.

    Thanks all

I'm guessing you have a pretty good profit margin, so I agree with the others about using FB ads and PPC in general. But do some studying first, as you can run through some serious money using FB.

You'll also need to have a landing page that converts well. You'll need to test whether it's better to try to make sales directly from the page, capture email leads or both.

Be sure you're listed in all the online travel guides.

It also seems like it may be a good idea for a Youtube channel. But don't limit your channel to just your own services, find other local ideas to create videos around. You can also try Youtube's PPC.

You can also try sending press releases to local media. Don't just promo your own business. Instead, create "info" press releases around events like the anniversary of the board game Clue, or Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, or any other fictional detective character or author and slip in a sentence or two about how your business is having a special offer "in celebration" of the anniversary.

PS...I'm not sure exactly how to go about this, but maybe start your own "day", like International Female Detective Day.

So with the success you are having... you now have a buyers list ... what could you do with a buyers list.

    Sell them a new game.
    Ask for referrals.
Ask them what would be of interest now that they tried out your initial offer.
Turn that interest into more offers.

The point is, you have people interested. Sell them more. There is little costs involved.

How about advertising on blogs where those Mums read and hang out online. Maybe the blog can even run a story about you. And send a press release to your local newspaper :-)

Sounds like you are mostly targeting local customers.

You know your demos well, so use them. Are any of your games in popular tourist areas? You might be able to target women from other areas looking for something different to do on holiday in your city.

Targeted ads on travel booking sites using FB custom audiences might work.

Marketing your game as an alternative to the stereotypical "booze and strippers" bachelorette party might work.

Riffing on one of Kurt's ideas, you may be able to work out affiliate deals with travel, holiday and even convention bureaus and blogs that also target the cities your games are designed around.

    Lots of possibilities...

Is the place where this is offered a tourist town or mostly locals? If it's a tourist town, work with the "influencers" like cab and limo drivers and hotel doorman. Throw a party for cab and limo drivers. Give them free passes to build awareness and goodwill, and if legal where you are, consider giving them kickbacks for bringing you customers.

Give local media free passes. Send them things like quality coffee mugs that they'll actually use with your name and contact info on them.

Have customers "check in" on Facebook. Have them post reviews on the online citations sites.

Start an affiliate program and pay sites to send you customers.

    Network with party planners.

Give discounts to local organizations that have similar demographics.
