Email Marketing - Self Hosting or Not?

Hello,

I have recently secured a couple of local clients that want to get going with email marketing. So now I am seriously weighing my options as to Do I Self Host with a program like AutoResponse Plus/Interspire Email Marketer or do I use a service like Aweber/GetResponse.

Now I am leaning more towards self hosting for the main reason of being able to input an email list that any business already has without them having to opt in again. But I have some questions and concerns.

Please if anyone has insight or personal experience in this let me know what you think or prefer.

With a self hosted email responder:

Where do you host yours? Is it on a private server or just shared hosting, I hear most hosting places only allow an account to send out a maximum of 500 emails an hour.

Do you have to spend a lot of time to keep your ip from being blacklisted? If the deliver-ability is brutal then it doesn't make sense going with the self hosting. What are your experiences?

Those are the main problems I would have, so again if anyone has expertise or personal experience that can help me decide then that would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Brett

If i am not mistaken, I heard there
is an internet marketer that has 5
    or 6 different private hosting
just for database and email marketing..

Its gonna cost a lot..but its gonna
worth it if you have lots and
    lots of subscribers/lists..

If you want to use self hosting, you will need to find a hosting company that allows you to send enough emails.

Hostgator for example, only allow up to 20 emails per hour, so this would probably not be enough for you.

    Hi,

The problem you may have with self hosting is you need at least a VPS (check the limitations) or a dedicated server (recommended). Then you get into having to manage it. Unless you have a built in fee added, and the time, it may be more than you want to deal with. Then keeping up with the spam blocks from the ISPs and 3rd party mail providers.

I would recommend using a service.

    Thanks,

    John

It comes down to a few things:

    1) Control
    2) Deliverability
    3) Management

You definitely maintain control over your list by self hosting. However, do "YOU" want to be responsible for ensuring your emails get delivered 90% of the time or more? Do you want to mange the actual AR system yourself?

Or, would you rather focus on the areas that are your core competencies and outsource to those who do it for a living that will free you up and provide some "peace of mind?"

Also consider, if there is a technical problem and you self-host the buck stops with you. Do you want to provide support in that manner?

It's not an easy decision just take your time and do what's best for your clients in the long run.

It is too easy to get kicked from your host if you do it your self and if you are actually talking about true self hosting where you have the hardware and the internet connection then you run the risk of getting booted by your ISP.
Don't waste the effort trying to reinvent the wheel when you can outsource it and charge your clients a small mark up to act as the go between.
