Too many eggs - what to do with this mistake?

Hey mates,

The amazing ideas warriors generate always inspires me. Maybe my problem and your solutions could help a TON of people here.

Quick summary:

My main thing I do online is have people "buy me and my stuff". Some physical products, some cd's, some trainings. Everything pretty much points to a handful of sites, which you can get something or contact me.

The problem: My sites are down. It's a server issue. Help desk says they will be up sometime in the next few hours. They've been down since early sunday.

My request:

How else could I structure my biz, so that I don't get caught with 90% of my stuff gone?

Can I actually sell me and my stuff on blogger blogs for example?

What about squidoo?

What else / how else could I approach "sharing and selling" me and my stuff that's not centralized on my servers?

I suspect this could help a lot of people, considering that if your main host disappeared, what would happen to "your world".

Looking forward to your suggestions, thoughts and ideas.

I had that situation happen one time and I built my own server. I could not be happier with the results as I now have complete control of my business.

The point being that ANYONE can build their own server.

Not to hijack the thread, but where are you co-locating your server? How do you handle maintenance, parts, etc. I've always wanted to get into co-locating.

John, the server is right next to me, like literally right next to me. My internet service provider allows me to host one from home (Anyone can host their own servers as 90% of ISP allows it)

Server software - Centos 5.3 but upgrading to Mandriva later this week since it is faster
Cpanel - I decided to use another version that had more features
DNS Server - So people can find my sites
Mail Server - Handles all mail for all my sites
PHP, mysql and all the other goodies you expect from hostgator or equivalent

I have a server that I built that is stronger than what hostgator has listed on their website and completely customizable.

EDIT: There are a lot more features that would take too long to write about. Besides my regular backups, no maintenance needed. I even host websites for my customers here with abosulutely no problems.

    Greenovni,

Thank you. I could get into having my own server. I'll look into that for a project to play with in my spare time. Where is a good place to begin?

And who else has some ideas? Outside the server solution....

Find hosting with a Service Level Agreement so at least you are paid compensation when the service fails. Go for one that specifies 99.9% uptime. Quite a few ISPs give 99% which allows more than 7 hours per month downtime.
