FTC Bans Some So-Called Robocalls

The Federal Trade Commission has banned telemarketers from making prerecorded commercial telemarketing calls to consumers unless they obtain permission in writing from consumers who want to receive such calls.

The ban takes effect Sept. 1.

After that date, telemarketers who violate this rule will face penalties of up to $16,000 per call, according to the FTC.

However, this new prohibition does not apply to calls from politicians, banks, telephone carriers and most charitable organizations or other recorded calls as long as they don't try to sell anything, according other FTC.

I've been getting a lot of phone-spam for the last year or
so. Because I have a business line, I cannot get it on the
do-not-call list - not that I think that would stop the low-lifes
who use this abusive and invasive form of marketing.

I'd like to see the guys who run crap operations like
IbuzzPro thrown in the slammer for the costs in wasted
time they've imposed on thousands if not millions of people.

Can't wait until tomorrow. Got a new phone number recently at home and they are highly annoying.

There's a thread that has been started on this here as well:

    RoboCall Thread

I am sooo glad that this has been done though. It's about time the crackdown has begun.

Phew! I was in Los Angeles for a few months.. and what the heck happened? Every 2-3 days I would get a call "We just want to warn you that your credit score sucks" and "you have a car payment over due, to talk to... blah blah"... Yet I have no car in america, or any credit cards in america. Lol so funyn. So this is a great thing if it gets away

    Applause!

I was happy when I started hearing this story...

Even happier when I heard how strict it was...

Sure the marketer in me sheds a small tear for the few legit users who's clients want the robo call...

But for me its a pleasure to hear this so I do not get any more of those scammers calling me about fake credit card interest rate reduction or fake auto warranties.

I would even have more joy hearing about the phone spammers going to prison than email spammers... there is just something grating about being jolted by a phone spam only to hear "Heather" tell me about my last chance to get a better interest rate on a fake credit card or fake extension to my auto warranty.

Great ... these are precisely the robo-spammers I was hoping the law would cover.

Hmmm, it says "calls to consumers," but nothing about robocalls to businesses! I wonder if these are still allowed.

I get 3 to 5 of them a day at my office.

The law will phase in for "Calls to business'" in 12 to 18 months.
It's in the actual FTC government bill. So, it will apply to them. It will work faster if people start complaining right away on businesses.

I don't get this thread. It sounds like things like iBuzzPro are now illegal and I know people who are still pushing it and trying to get me to buy it. Does anyone know if it's really illegal and if it's being enforced at all?

If it is illegal do you have a reference to the law?

I love the robocalls that tell me
"wait on hold while they find an
    operator".

Bad enough I have to wait on hold
when I call them, who would ever
wait on hold for an incoming call?
