Remember Nordstrom? Superior customer service with:

For the life of me, I cannot remember where I first heard about Nordstrom's awesome business practices and customer service....

... But it sure did stay with me!

Well,

5 Lifelong Business Lessons from Nordstrom - Marketo

just popped up and reminded me of it.

5 takeaways the employee had:

1. Make Praise and Celebration the Lifeblood of Your Culture
2. Focus on the Customer and The Money Will Follow
3. You Need 2 Ingredients for a Magic Team: Excellent People & Excellent Products
4. Act Like Your Name Is on the Door
5. Lead by Example

And apparently I'm not the only person to remember - look at these resources too!

We had a Nordstrom about five miles from where I lived. I shopped there a few times but found it hard to pay (what seemed to me) excessively high prices for goods that could be found elsewhere, almost always for less.

The shopping experience was nice, pretty sterile, but there was always piano music in the background, pretty slender women at each counter, pretty smells floating in the air, and lots of clerks asking me if they could help. Like I say, it was nice, but I didn't spend much money with them.

Apparently neither did anyone else. A few years back Nordstrom closed down their story, left a lot of employees out of work, put a dent in the retail economy, and said goodbye.

"What takeaways can you, well, take"?
    • Their business model was not built for a sluggish retail economy
    • Nordstrom came and went in just a few years - they didn't last
    • How you train your employees sometimes doesn't translate to more sales
    • Brick and mortar businesses sometimes find it hard to compete today
    • "Feel good philosophies" portray your business as customer centric, but successful business today takes more than that
Just a few of my thoughts about Nordstrom.
