YES! The Internet offers plenty of opportunities for bloggers and content writers

For your information:

Freelancer.com acquired vWorker in 2012, I'm not sure.
Elance and oDesk merged, that's Upwork now.
Guru is clinically dead, I guess?!

With all due respect to all other alternatives Upwork and Freelancer are the only major league players right now. I think that Freelancer has 20M users right now.

You may also check LinkedIn. There's this new function called, damn I forgot. But, it's only local for the time being.

Either way, no work for free! That's my word of advice!

Your friend could also consider writing for herself. There are many ways to monetize a site or blog such as Google AdSense, Affiliate opportunities, etc. If she is able to generate interesting and engaging content, it may be worth considering.

You can use google to ask your question and get feedback straight away. Have you looked at networks like elance? Even fiverr.com. Don't let the name fool ya. You can make some pretty good money.

Forget writing for any of those content mills. If your friend wants to make a good living as a freelance writer, then he/she should put up a website and start soliciting clients diectly. A good freelance content writer can easily command $50-$100 for a simple 500 word article. Anything longer/more complex will get an even higher rate.

A good way to start is by bidding for for jobs on Upwork. Target those that will pay at least $50 per 500 words. It takes some digging, but they're out there. After working with a client for a while, I ween them off Upwork so they pay me directly, avoiding Upwork's fees.

But a good website and some good marketing will get your friend plenty of work.

Competition isn't the only problem. I think that new fees policy of mind blowing 20% is fully effective as of this month. So, don't forget about that. Also, there's a notorious section number (I forgot, but I can check), which says that you're obliged to pay fees to Upwork for 2 years, if you got your client on this network. So, please think again if it's worth of all the trouble.

I don't know how long have you been working on Upwork. Because there's this new crazy 20% fee, lot of guys are looking for ways to work outside Upwork. Yet, there's something you should be fully aware of.

There's this thing called the Section 7 of Upwork Terms it's called Non-Circumvention.To make the long story short. Upwork owns you literally for 2 years. By accepting their Terms, which you did just like me and so many other freelancers, you accepted to treat your relationship with your client as the Upwork "property."

All contracts initiated and developed on Upwork are treated as Upwork ownership for the next 2 years. You can check the Terms yourself. Now, the catch is to find a trustworthy client who's not gonna report you to Upwork, which is something that happened to me. I was blackmailed and forced to work almost for free.

I'm currently happy with my projects on Freelancer. Compared to Upwork a very reasonable fee of 10% and with no crazy rules.

I only have a few clients from Upwork, so it doesn't make up the bulk of my business. Luckily, I've earned enough there to qualify for the 10% fee (still high, but it's the cost of doing business). My Upwork clients have been with me for a long time and we have discussed moving away from the platform. I definitely try to spread all my eggs around.

If her writing is good, you can make a website & offer for writing. On the other hand, she can work as a freelancer in various Freelancing market place. Such as Upwork, Fiverr or, other site like these. Best of luck. Thanks for your advance.

I'm going to suggest another route:

Contact local businesses to write for: web content, press releases, etc.

They generally pay well and aren't trying to hire the cheapest writer. They will pay for quality.

If your friend want a writing jobs then you can search online freelancer sites such as upwork, fiverr and many more. I also use upwork and its free to join you can upload your CV and will get writing projects. So, you are free to choose project or client with whom you want to work.

If she is starting out this is a great way to get into content writing. I would suggest using Freelancer.com or similar such as UpWork or Elance.. they are the sites most of my colleagues use and they get a great response. Be aware that these sites have people from all over the globe vying for work, so the rates vary so you may be up against people who are willing to do the same work for a tenth of the price. While your friend gets established she may need to do jobs that might not be at the usual rate she might like, however you do need to establish a profile on these sites so you should be aware that the hourly rate is quite a bit lower and you do need to pass on a percentage of your earnings for each project to the platform. It can range from 10% and up, so be aware of this as it can be a surprise when the cut is taken. Overall, it is a great way to test the waters and see if this is an avenue you would like to pursue. Why he do not starts with the Freelancing sites? He can start with the Fiverr, Upwork. If he have a good writing skill, he will get a good job. There are many buyers is waiting on the freelancing market for him. Then he can buy a Domain & Hosting. He can upload his previous work sample, if one search online to get a good writer. he may get this job also. Thanks for your advance.

Maybe she should look again at iWriter as I just got an email from them today regarding some upcoming improvements:

"We have BIG improvements coming to the iWriter platform in 2017. One of which includes a brand new website layout/design with much added and improved functionality. It has been a 2 year process and we are currently in the testing phase."

I'd say as you look at all those fab sites to definitely have her start her own blog, to build her authority.

Then clients can flow to her too versus her always being on the hunt!

Set up a nice Hire Me page. Write posts about freelancing and writing. Attract clients.

I've used textbrokers.com from time to time. I found the lead on ratracebellion.com - an at-home employment site. The best site by far I've found, however, is WritersinCharge. Many, many possibilities there.

The best way to get writing gigs IMHO is by
building a list and sending daily emails.

This give you an opportunity to demonstrate
your skill and knowledge and, over time,
builds a relationship with your list.

(Eventually people will ask you to write
for them.)

This is easier said than done, so I suggest
you start with Fiverr because it's pretty
easy to make money there (Provided you
can actually write.)

When I think of Websites with readily available writing jobs and that is easy to join iwriter comes to mind. It's just that you need to be patient when you are still at the beginner level and refresh the job page every few minutes in order to find writing jobs.

But after writing and submitting up to 25 article - rejected and accepted - you will move to the premium level whenever you get a 4.1 rating or higher. Here there are over a hundred jobs to choose from every time of the day.

Fiverr pretty much DECIMATED most other writing platforms due to three key factors

1) Buyer volume - tons of buyers on Fiverr

2) Flex pricing

3) Robust feedback system

Kinda makes you wonder why (a rapidly declining number of) people are still using Upwork and other platforms.
