I have identified a software niche, I want to rank for that niche. It has many keywords totaling 20K+ searches a month.

How do I start ranking for the niche and become an authority in the space? What do I choose to spend my energy on first? High volume keywords or long tail lower competition keywords?

    Hi,

I would go for the long tail lower competition keywords as they will has less competition and will be easier to rank for. BTW is your site new? If it is I would definitely go for less competition keywords.

You see you gotta build you DA and PA, which are really important factors for ranking high in search.

    Hope this helped!

Obviously long tail lower competition keywords. Also focus on page optimization. Keep the keyword density under 2.0. Keep your main keyword in h2 tag and h3 tag. Also add your keyword in image alt tag. This will help you a lot for ranking.

I think it would make sense to start with the more targeted long tail keywords and build up from there

I would suggest to get mid or low competing keywords and good search volume. You can find them with special software or you can find good keyword research service on seoclerks.

My suggestion is to find out who your competition is first before anything

if you are in a niche that is heavy in brands good luck, you are going to have a very difficult time getting to page one

you want to be where they are not if you have very stiff competition

It seems like you are new to SEO... so here is the fastest way to get this done:
    1. start with the lowest hanging fruit ( the list competetive keyword )
    2. Make a video on youtube and try rank on the fist page.
    3. If it takes long to rank buy some backlinks from fiverr
    4. Once your video is on the first page check if it is converting
    5. if it is converting, then you can build a site and do SEO for it

High volume keywords or long tail keywords?

If someone has to ask that means they don't know SEO so start with the weakest comp. keywords you can find.

You should still use high comp. keywords on your site/pages for relevancy but you won't be ranking anytime soon.

lesser competition for long tail keys. The more common short keywords may also be the targets of a lot of marketers in the same niche as you are. It's tough to find long tail keywords though. What I would do is I just create my own long term keywords and basically insert my main key. That is if I can't find any when doing a keyword research.

As per my experience I would like say that long tail keyword will be more helpful to rank fast. As your niche is software, so long tail keyword will give better output to rank in the search engine for this niche.

Keyword research is one of those standard practices that we do in SEO.

As one of the top entrepreneur and my marketing Guru "Neil Patel" clearly mentioned below few lines just few days back on his Blog i.e. Quicksprout.com

But search engines today aren't looking only at keywords. Search engine looking at hundreds of different factors. And keywords? they are only a small part of big picture.

He also said that "Keyword research is still important.

    But

We need to analyze more - that what exactly users are searching for and search engine indexing for.

In you case understand the 'Users Intent' and choose Low Hanging Fruits - Long Tail Keywords those low in competition but high chances of conversions.

You can get more details on below reference url about keywords & user intent:

Another vote for long tail keywords here. They are more specific and targeted. You want your target audience to click on your content because they saw their search term within your website = lower bounce rate.

You are unlikely to rank for a high competition keywords if your website is less authoritative than first 10 websites in the SERP. It all depends on your website's authority. If you can compete on a high level then go for that if not then stay with long tail keywords. As simple as that.

I would go for long-tailed, less competition is better, right? But also, i would maybe put in high volume keys, just to attract as much as i can. Choose wisely, so you wouldn't have to sompete with others and make it easier to rank!

If your site is already a High Authority site you should start focusing on High Volume Keywords. Where as if you are in a process of building authority for your website / blog the you should focus on Low competition and easy to rank long tail keywords

Just take a look at the competition. Analyze their ranks, backlinks and overall authority. This should give you an idea on how difficult would be to rank for certain keywords. If you don't have any built authority choose the ones that are the most easy to rank for. If you have an authority bigger than your competition, then by all means, try ranking for them.

When you type in query in the search engine, the search engine attempts to display the most relevant information related to your search query. This is the most crucial step, but also the most beneficial or relevant to the searcher’s query. There are cases in which some search engines copy the results of other search engines. (Bing used to copy some of the google results). Many of them work with the keywords, some allow the user to ask a question and some include advance feature like filtering or keyword proximity by age of content.
The ranking algorithm plays key role in checking your search query against billions of web pages across the internet. This process is very complex and for this purpose some companies keep an eye on their own ranking algorithm as one of the patented industry secrets.
What is the reason behind such thing?
The answer is simple. The companies want competitive advantage for a start, so that by providing best searched results, they can become leaders in the market. Second reason is to avoid gaming of the system and giving a partial benefit to one site over another.
If the internal methodology involved in SEO is understood, then chances of hacking the system are more.Hackers take advantage of the ranking factors and further exploit them for monetary gain.
