Of course, it's a good option.
But the question is what product or service your company is selling, and how much money you are ready to invest in marketing campaing.
If you are an affiliate marketer selling other people's stuff and making a few thousand dollars a month, you don't need other people's helpe. You are the marketer.
But if you are here to hire marketers, yes, hiring a digital marketing agency is a good option!

It's definitely a good option if you don't have the time or perhaps even the knowledge to do it yourself. You'll have to research and find an agency/plan that works for your type of business and your goals.

In fact, I think that's the first step you should start with: defining your goals. "Raising online presence" is a good start but you might need to go more narrow than that. Things like: reaching 1000 likes on your new Facebook page, high engagement on your posts and so on. Think about what your expectations are and try to find a service that fits your needs.

And what is the better option, doing it on your own?

They are the experts. It makes sense to hire them to do things that you're not capable of doing. Just like going to the doctor or lawyer.

Of course, just like any service, there are good ones and there are bad ones. You have to determine if an agency is reliable.

If you hired the right agency, absolutely, and I am not just saying that because I own one but I actually have been using them in the past for my other sites as well

I've been using a digital marketing agency named mediareachers.com for about 3 month now to promote my business in social networks. I don't really have the time to do it myself. It's a good option if you do not want to expend too much money on your digital marketing. I'm enrolled on their sunflower plan which I believe it has been a good deal so far

If you have an affiliate blog promoting an ebook on how to lose man boobs, then hiring a digital agency to "raise your online presence" probably won't be a good idea.

However, if you are an established brick-n-mortar business serving the local community and would like to expand your reach, then that's a different story.

Digital marketing is something any up and coming business needs. And paying the right people to do it for you.
There are thousands of people out there claiming to be digital marketers, but when you see what their actually doing you'll think to yourself: "I can do that. Why am I paying for this?"
And the proof is in the pudding. Like any form of marketing, digital marketing takes time to positively affect your business, and unfortunately 3 months down the line when you find out that nothing has changed, you have already paid your digital marketer.
So what is the difference between a digital marketer that thinks he knows what he's doing and a professional digital marketing agency?
A professional digital marketing agency has to have a SEO magician somewhere in there. That is what makes all the facebooks posts and adwords tick.
When doing your research, ask them the difficult questions. Make sure they know what their talking about.

If I'm a lawyer, dentist or offering well-paid professional service, it would be good to hire a digital marketing agency/SEO to help people discover my business. My time is also more expensive vs paying an SEO agency to do the online marketing tasks required. However, you need to verify if they only use white hat tactics/ best practices for safe, long-term traffic growth.

When you are not getting any good sales leads for your business; competitors are winning more customers online, and you don't have any marketing skills or a competent marketing person in you team, then you should hire a digital marketing agency.
