Are you aware of the big trend of adult coloring books?

I've seen them everywhere (and not just bookstores!). We're talking offline businesses like doctors, therapists, etc....

Well guess what. For us baby boomers:

    Barb, Bill Platt has had an offer here on this forum since last year on getting yourself going with the adult coloring books.

    Some people are starting to think it's over saturated. I think there is still a huge market for this in that nearly every offline business can benefit still.

      This is huge in Australia, and some of the offshoots are all the creative outlets that drawing and colouring offer.

      It's a really interesting niche, however it has been popular for a couple of years now and doesn't seem to be a fad.

    There are apps also.

    I guess if there is a dangera saturation, all depends on the image theme.

    Those mandala books are a spiritually cool wastea time — symmetric patterns onto which you can impose color-based order.

    Beats attackin' people with machetes I guess.

    I would love to see pulsatin' themes for android that pick up on your mood an' device usage.

    Prolly a privacy nightmare, but I could use a portable chromatic cuttlefish right now — throbbing red an' swirly for postin' to WF, shimmerin' with stars for watchin' YouToob videos, an' ripplin' with dusky clouds when I am writin' out dirty thoughts.

    If these exist already, my inbox is open to geeko suggesto.

    im in the baby shower business

    there is no reason why I couldnt get prints made for this.

    the patterns are very intricate though.

        Yeah, I don't think people buy new ones. They buy one, get it out of their system and then move on. They may not even color the whole book in.

        Some people might complete and buy another, but they will be in the minority I think...

          If I'm crazy stressed out I can finish one coloring book with like 40 pages in less then 2 weeks. I have a collection of 7 that are all done and I just started in December! I went through them so quickly I began hunting for the extreme ones that have tiny lines and spaces -- takes me much longer now and thus increases the relaxing element. ( bought a new one yesterday lol)

          I know old women who go through them like cheesecake ; 1 a week and beg for more. When I find cheap ones or discount ones I take them to senior centers all the time.

          In addition these books are amazing for children who are struggling or depressed. I honestly wish when I was 14 and going through bullying I had these kind of books to de-stress and relax me.

          SO YEAH! People do buy them and buy tons of them. The field needs so many more too.

          Please don't knock it out until you try it ... you'd be surprised at just how amazing it feels.

          You are completely wrong. Fans of the hobby rarely buy just one book at a time, first of all - they buy several. And there are a LOT of people in this hobby. There are Facebook groups for adult colorists with over 25,000 people in them.

          As of right now, there are 3 coloring books in the top 20 best-selling print books of this year.This is a viable market. I don't believe it's a fad, either, although I do expect it to settle down a bit and even out.

          Someone said it was getting over-saturated and I don't believe that, either. It's almost impossible to over-saturate a consumable market.

        My primary offline business deals with custom picture framing so we see the results of fads and trends all the time when they start framing them.

        If you look back you can see the development of half-cross stitch tapestries.

        Full cross stitch needleworks

        Followed by paper tole.

        Then scrapbooking.

        Now adult colouring in.

        The devotees of each craft do tend to become long-term practitioners and they produce volumes of work for people in my industry.

        I'm not quite sure the adult colouring in has quite got the legs in regards to framing the finished artworks yet but if the past trends are any indicator there will be follow-on work from this trend.

        I'd always sold artist supplies and other materials so have had close contact with the wholesale and importer end of the market and in many cases when I've discussed the adult colouring in trend with the major players they all say the same thing.

        They are amazed at the growth and in many cases the trend has got their businesses through tough times. All of them are selling boatloads of pencils and multitudes of colouring in design books.

        In my neck of the woods I've seen a major photographic supplier of 60 years plus standing transform their business through the craft niches. First with scrapbooking and now with colouring in.

        About 10 months ago now they stopped printing photos and supplying photographic equipment and now solely do craft supplies.

        Here's hoping some of the "better" colouring in becomes worthy of custom framing because then my industry will benefit moving forward.

    I've been a professional cartoonist for over 35 years and was alerted to the new wave of adult coloring books a year and a half ago. Will be launching my series in a few months. The right niche, right price, great fanbase traffic all come into play. Yes the industry is saturated with hacks and how-to gurus, but time exposes them and people know what quality is. Just about every colleague I know working for Disney, Marvel Comics, DC Comics and the rest are jumping on the bandwagon. It's a product that recycles itself especially if it's beloved.
