How can Twitter actually build my email list?

I keep hearing how Twitter can build my email list, but how exactly?

I have an email list of about 40,000 on Aweber, but I don't understand how I can grow that list from using Twitter. I mean, you can only send tweets to people who have already agreed to follow you, right?

What am I missing here? Where do the NEW people come from?

There are ways to get new followers. For instance you can find the top rated people on Twellow (in your category) follow them and also follow the first couple of pages of their followers. These people will usually follow you in return. Hope I didn't offend any marketers by saying this, but there also other ways to get new followers.

So are you saying that people will just automatically start following me just because I started following them?

Are people that indiscriminate? Wouldn't people get inundated with too many tweets that way?

Anyway, thanks for that response. Makes sense and I'm looking forward to learning more.

          Hm, Alexa, that's interesting, thanks.

I'm just wondering what the big advantage Twitter has over email marketing.

Or, more specifically, how it can grow my business.

      Here's another thing I don't get . . .

When I use email marketing, I know the person can go to a web page and take advantage of an offer I might be extending.

When it comes to a tweet, they're just checking a text message, right? Doesn't seem ideal for driving traffic.

Seems more beneficial for relationship-building, which is certainly important, but I still don't see how you can build a meaningful and sizable list with it.

The method of getting a bunch of followers and then unfollowing them is a different than what I was referring to. I don't unfollow because I did my research up front. My followers are people I want to do business with. Like everything else, use some common sense

Here's 5 ways you can use Twitter to build a list.

1.) Be interesting! Share resources in your niche and show you're an expert.

2.) Answer RTs for help on your blog, and then tweet about that. Some questions require more than 140 characters to answer...so write up a complete solution and then send a @ to the person who asked (making certain you also use a targeted hashtag too).

3.) Create a Twelcome page - that's a Twitter landing page. Make sure slant that content TO twitter.

4.) Look for niche RT requests and RT them.

      5.) Participate in Friday Follows.

You can promote your blog/site posts on Twitter; make certain you have several ways for people to opt in for something. Voila, your list grows.

      Hope that helps,

    Thanks, Barbara.

I get how you can easily drive traffic from Twitter to an email list.

But perhaps I should have clarified my question better, because I still haven't heard how one can build a Twitter list. (And, sure, I realize I can send my email list to Twitter, but I'm looking to build NEW subscribers, not just move existing ones from one medium to another.

Yes, I can see how I can build my email list from Twitter, but how can you get a crowd of Twitter followers without violating their rules?

Thanks for your insight -- I really appreciate it.
