Paying writers to write article on my blog.

I'm paying writers to write articles on my blog.
I want to own the full copyright, but at the same time, I want the article to be posted under their name.

What is the common practice for informational sites like https://vulcanpost.com and The Verge

Do they pay the writers to post on their sites while crediting the article to them too?

Well, you can setup agreements so what they write belongs to X and they may or may not reproduce it on another site without permission.

In any case, they would still get credit for it because it would be published under their name. Then they can have a small bio section or something on the blog going to their website so they do get the credit whilst the article is protected on your blog.

Alex made an excellent point. To give someone a credit for his/her work it's not the same as dealing with copyrights. Honestly, I deliver most of my work as a ghostwriter, and I worry mainly to get paid. Every now and then, a client honors me with a credit for an article or a blog post. But, that's up to a client to decide. So, nothing to worry about, and I guess your writers are OK with it. Cheers! N

This is how newspapers and news websites work. The writer gets their name on the article but the publication owns the copyright. Even authors who sign with major publishing houses do not own the copyright to their work - the publisher does.

Just make sure you spell those terms out clearly for the writer. And most important of all, pay them a fair rate!

If the article is well written, informative, and something of value in the niche, I would make sure I owned the copyright and I would put that in the contract or agreement. Why wouldn't you want to own it?

  • It is not important who wrote the content. Before posting anywhere on the online, the writer must post on your blog. In this case you can pay him, there is no problem. You can tell the writer that he will never sell or, exchange the content with anyone else without you. Thanks a lot.

Write the terms into a contract and get the writer to sign. If you both agree to the terms in advance it shouldn't be a problem.
