I just brought a product on JVzoo and I was
stunned by the number of upsells. I used to think 6 or 7
upsells were bad and I was prepared to just keep clicking no.
But after I reached about 13 upsells I got so mad I
closed the page. After a while I cooled down then
went back. I checked google history it showed 13
upsell pages!
I went to the last page and continued, there were two
more to go through 15 upsells in all!
Is that the limit? I think we must ask ourselves as
marketers how insanely greedy we can get when all
that is focused on is the sale.
I would include the name of the product but probably
I believe that the rules prohibit that.

Thanks, had to vent,
Trevor

This is very stupid and short sighted from the vendor. I wonder if they have zero confidence in the quality of their product because practice like this won't make any sane person buy from them again. Atleast I won't.

Arunabh and Aizaku are right. Once I saw all those upsells
I had immediate doubts about the quality of the product.
After all, to go to such extreme attempts to get more money
gives some indication as to the mindset of the vendor.
Does it seem to you that they are intent on delivering a quality
        product?
I think it will backfire because many will seek refunds.

Hahaha... to each his/her own I suppose!

Truth be told, one very well known marketer "who shall not be named" did that to me one time, and while I was happy with the $27 FE product... an hour later when I finally accessed it... I was pissed off over the exhausting time drain - trying to access my goods.

I NEVER have bought another product from him. My methodology was he didn't value me as a customer or more importantly; he wasted an hour of my time with harassing upsells!

Maybe I shouldn't hold such a grudge, but seriously... just because I bought a coloring book and crayons doesn't mean I want Toys R Us pitching me their entire product line before I am permitted to leave the store.

Why not show me a couple (maybe even a few upsells) and follow up with an email to pitch all the other stuff after I access my purchase?

To me, it seems desperate on the vendors behalf and punishing from the buyers perspective... unless you're HSN and targeting obsessive buyers.

As I said, I think it will backfire, buyers will be a lot more likely to ask for refunds.
As Art 72 said, I will note the seller and not buy from them again. Even the person who
recommended the product might be suspect in my eyes, unless they did not actually
buy the product and were not aware of the upsells.

Upsells, downsells, frontsells, backsells, sidesells, bottomsells, topsells, insells, outsells, shake it all about sells ... and what do you have ... sells? Buy one sell and get another sell for just a penny.

In all seriousness. A lot of products now come with upsells especially in the PLR arena. You purchase the master resell rights of an ebook product, then they offer you the PLR version for an extra fee. Another upsell is the audio version and then the video version, then the PSD's and DOC's.

I am very wary purchasing a product because I'd like to know what the upsells are before I buy. So usually I see if they have a vendor page so I can see what they are offering on the upsell. If I think I can use a product or benefit I will buy it. I will then buy the upsells. I have wasted a lot of money on products and upsells in the past without looking into a purchase -- DO I NEED IT! So I investigate thoroughly before I commit to my purchase. I will also look for reviews, even know they are biased to get me to buy through their link, and I will look for other products the vendor is selling, and maybe I would buy their entire catalogue of products in one sitting. It all depends if I think the product is good and I can benefit from it.

    Regards...

    James...

yeah I think I know the product your speaking about. It's sick isn't it! It's a real turn off. I look at it as lets first see what the intial product is about and can I get results with that before I go ahead and buy everything your offering.

In my case, I did not even look at the upsells, just keep
scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking no.
But after 15 it gets very tiresome.
I remember one product only had about 6 upsells
but you were forced to view a video before each time
    before clicking no thanks.
I made a special note of who sold it and promised
never to buy from them again.

Greed? Sounds more like desperation to me.

In the real world, it would be like a shopkeeper ringing up your purchase and then grabbing your arm and showing you every other item in his shop.

"Wanna buy this, too? No? How about this one? Or this one?..."

My guess is that repeat business is a rarity for the vendor, so they try to get whatever they can before their customers start ignoring them.

Which leads to the "chicken or the egg" question. Is the vendor losing business because of the process, or is he using the process because he has no business?

Yep, a bit excessive for sure. Seems stupid to me. Why not just launch a separate product or a membership.

There's a well known marketer on this forum who launches with JVZoo, and I absolutely hate his funnels. He always has multiple OTO videos of him saying "Woah, wait just a second there. Before we go on...." It's so obnoxious, but I guess he thinks he's funny or persuasive or something. I think he's a jerk

The takeaway from this experience, for me at least, is this:

Market in your own business exactly like you would want to be marketed to yourself.

So now you've seen what another marketer is doing in his/her business and you find it obnoxious. So don't do it yourself in your own business. Now there's one less strategy (numerous upsells) that you need to concern yourself with.

BTW, I don't think you'll see this same thing happening much in non-IM niches. I have never personally seen more than two upsells in a random niche (and really, upsells are not that common at all).

15 is nuts! I think 2 or 3 is good. You get to the point where you piss people off and now they have a negative opinion of you and I would think it will hurt sales further down the funnel. I'm a big believer in relationship building and not just burn and churn.

I have One Upsell and that is it. I feel my product is good enough that I dont need to keep upselling the consumer.

And the thing I love is that you can still get the full results without the upsell...but the upsell does make it much easier and quicker but most products wont yield the results the sales page indicates unless you buy the 10 upsells.

15 upsells, and you didn't buy even 1 of them? LOL... i wonder what that post-immediate upsell conversion rate is. I do upsells, but just 1 product at a time. That's all i'm willing to do, and i'm sure that's all my customers' are willing to see.

I did not even look at the upsells, I simply was not interested.
I just wanted to see if it would do what they said it would.
It is quite reasonable in your case to have 1 or 2 upsells
and I have no quarrel with upsells, as long as the upsell
is not essential to the product. If the upsell is essential
to the product it should be included in the product.
