I am going to build a site on wordpress.

I bought a Domain from Namecheap and I have Hostgator as hosting.

What is the difference between pointing my domain to Hostgator or transfering the Domain to hostgator?

Also, from your experiences, which one should I do?

I did one of them before a long time ago involving the nameservers and the IP address, but don't remember how I did it or which one I did.

Hello Rick,

You should point your domain to Hostgator. It means to set nameservers to connect domain to your hosting.

Transfering domain is something totally different. That would mean to change your domain registrar. So your new domain registrar would be Hostgator instead of Namecheap. There is no need to do that, especially not now. If someone wants to transfer a domain it makes sense to do that just before the expiration date.
