Using a new domain vs. subdomain of existing website

Morning all,
I've recently had the idea and have seen potential to offer my services in another location to where I normally work, however, this new location could be a venture with a friend, so it could be a new business.

I'm unsure as to whether it would be better to set up a new page(s) for this new location on my existing domain, which currently does reasonably well on google for the work we currently do and has a number of followers or to set up a completely new website, with a new domain name which focuses entirely on the new area, which would be starting from scratch. From what I can tell, it would take time to promote a new site, but may do better in the long run if it's entirely dedicated to this new area.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Not enough info to give any usable advice. It sounds like you DO something locally, and you want to expand to your friend's location and do the same thing?

I'd try to work off of existing traffic, and get them involved, maybe via referrals. You may need a new domain name down the road, but why not start creating content for it, with what you have already?

If you have a sub-domain it will be reflected under the root web address having no self identity or address.

I would use a new domain that way it can have it's own identity propagate with its own content.
SEO functions are more effective on domain rather than subs

IMO, a web site should be laser focused on the market or niche at hand.

Trying to run several different niches, even though the products or services may be partially related, from one web site will cause you to lose your focus.

I would start a new web site for your new emphasis. If the new venture with your friend bombs out, it won't have an impact of your current site.

You can always "introduce" your new site to your current customers and your original site to the new prospects coming to your new site.

One other thing to think about. You are taking on a partner in your new business. Should he have any claim on the work you've already done with your original site? I don't think so.

I build websites for small business clients. So I get this type of question a lot. Basically here's what I do, if it's just adding a new location, I put it on the same site. But if it's a separate business, this may include a different biz name, contact info, etc then I create another new site.

So yes, I would get a new domain and setup the new site to focus specifically on the new area. But, and this is important, without knowing your niche I'm saying generally yes this is what I'd do.

Many thanks all, it looks like a new domain is the way forwards, and to put a page on my existing site to direct traffic towards it.

I think that's the right choice too...

I would add that a subdomain is treated as a separate domain by Google, so there is no SEO/traffic advantage to using a subdomain. You would be starting from scratch anyway.

Is there a chance you may add additional "locations" in the future? If so, I would go with subdomains like CL.

    boston.yoursite.com

    seattle.yoursite.com

    etc.
